Gary Owen (born 1929 in Tumble , Carmarthenshire , Wales , † July 3, 1995 in Brisbane , Australia ) was a Welsh-Australian snooker player .

Career

Owen won the British U-16 championship in 1944, and six years later he lost the final of the English amateur championship.

By winning the British amateur championship in 1963 he was able to participate in the IBSF World Snooker Championship in 1963 and won the title. Three years later he was able to defend his title against John Spencer .

After the Challenges Matches were abolished at the World Snooker Championship , Owen took part in 1969 . With victories over Jackie Rea and Fred Davis , Owen made it to the finals. He played a century break, but lost to John Spencer 24:37 . 1 year later Owen was eliminated in the semifinals against John Pulman .

In the course of the World Snooker Championship in 1971 , Owen emigrated to Australia . He took on Australian citizenship, which entitles him to participate in the Australian Professional Championship . In 1972 and 1973 he reached the finals, but lost both times to series winner Eddie Charlton . As part of the Snooker World Championships, Owen reached the quarter-finals in 1973 and 1975 and the second round in 1974 and 1976 .

Owen has a brother, Marcus Owen (1935–1987).
