Fred Davis OBE (born August 13, 1913 in Chesterfield , † April 16, 1998 in Denbighshire ) was an English billiards player . He is multiple world champion in the disciplines of snooker and English billiards .
Davis became a professional billiards player in 1929 and played his first professional snooker match in 1937 . He was the twelve years younger brother of Joe Davis , who dominated the sport of snooker from 1927 to 1946. Joe did not participate in the World Championship after his victory in 1946, paving the way for Fred, who became World Champion in 1948, 1949 and 1951.
In 1940, when they competed for the only time in the world championship final, Joe won 37:36. Due to disagreements between some players and the governing body, Davis founded the Professional Matchplay Championship in 1952, which he won every year from 1952 to 1956. Davis retired from active snooker in 1957. When the World Championship was held again after a six-year break in 1964, Davis came back from retirement. However, he lost to John Pulman in 1964, 1965 and 1966, respectively .
In 1976 the world rankings were introduced. Davis's skills had long before reached their highest level, but he was fourth that year, and in 1977 he was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire . He reached the semi-finals of the World Snooker Championship in 1978 at the age of 64. Another two years later (1980 and then 1981) he won the world championship in English Billiards .
Davis played professionally well into old age. In 1984, at the age of 70, he played for the last time in the World Snooker Championship. In 1992 he retired at the age of 78.
Fred Davis is not related to Steve Davis , who was world snooker champion six times in the 1980s.
In 2011 he was inducted into the Snooker Hall of Fame along with his brother .
