The Australian Professional Championship 1976 was a professional snooker tournament in the context of the 1976/77 season without influence on the world rankings and in function of the national professional championship of Australia. The tournament without prize money and sponsors was held in September 1976 at Dandenong Football Club in the Australian city of Melbourne . The winner for the eighth time in a row and for the eleventh time overall was Eddie Charlton , who benefited in the final from Paddy Morgan's abandonment without a fight . Records of potentially high breaks are unknown.
Tournament course
Again a total of six players took part in the tournament, but this time they were completely professional players. Four of the six players already started in a two-game first round, the winners of which met in the semi-finals, the latter game being complemented by the encounter between the other two players. The winners of the semi-finals finally met in the final. The first round was played in the best of 29 frames mode and the semifinals in the best of 39 frames and best of 41 frames mode . The mode in which the final should have been played is unknown.

final
Local hero and record winner Eddie Charlton was seeded for the semi-finals and had once again reached the final with a clear 21:10 win over Gary Owen . In this he met Paddy Morgan , who started the tournament with a narrow victory over Ron Mares in the first round and moved into the final with a slightly more clear victory over Warren Simpson in the semifinals. For unknown reasons, however, Morgan gave up the game without a fight, so that Charlton won the tournament for the eighth time in a row and for the eleventh time overall.
