The 1986 Winfield Australian Masters , and partly also the 1986 Winfield Masters , was a professional snooker invitation tournament for the 1986/87 season . The tournament was held from June 30 to July 4, 1986 either in the Parramatta Leagues Club in the Parramatta district or in the City Tattersalls Club in the Australian city of Sydney . The winner was the Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor , who prevailed 3-2 in the final against the Englishman Steve Davis . Data on potentially high breaks are unknown.
Prize money
Again the tournament was sponsored by Winfield. The prize money fell by a good three quarters compared to the previous year to 16,000 pounds sterling , which was only paid to the winner of the tournament.
Tournament course
With regard to the exact venue of the tournament, there is uncertainty insofar as both the Parramatta Leagues Club and the City Tattersalls Club - each in Sydney - are named as the same. In contrast to previous years, a European or a British professional player competed against an Australian professional or amateur player in the round of 16. Up to and including the semi-finals, the game was played in the best of 3 frames mode , followed by the final in the best of 5 frames mode .

final
Already in the first round all Australian participants of the tournament were eliminated, whereby even well-known players like Eddie Charlton or last year's finalist John Campbell lost in the same round via white wash . In the quarter-finals, last year's winner Tony Meo and his predecessor Tony Knowles, two former winners of the tournament, were eliminated before Dennis Taylor made it to the finals in the semifinals with his third white wash in a row, while Steve Davis won the reigning world champion Joe Johnson with 2 : Defeated 1, giving a total of two frames during the tournament.
No exact results have been reported from the endgame itself. It is known that in the new edition of the final of the World Snooker Championship in 1985, as then, the game in the decider ended in favor of Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor , who thus won the game 3: 2 and thus the tournament.
