The Tolly Cobbold English Professional Championship 1987 was a professional snooker tournament without influence on the world rankings in the context of the 1986/87 season for the purpose of determining the English professional champion. The main round of the tournament was held from February 6 to 11, 1987 in the Corn Exchange in the English city of Ipswich . The winner was defending champion Tony Meo , who defeated Les Dodd 9: 5 in the final , who was in the final of a professional tournament for the only time in his career. As in the previous year, John Virgo played the highest break of the tournament, this year with a 139 break.
Prize money
As in the two previous years, the tournament was subsidized by the WPBSA and sponsored by the Tolly Cobbold brewery in Ipswich . Compared to last year, the prize money increased by £ 6,000 to £ 86,000, of which a good fifth went to the winner.

Tournament course
The tournament started with the qualification between December 13th and 17th of the previous year, but it was not until the beginning of February that the tournament continued with the main round. A total of 56 players took part in the tournament, increasing the number of participants by six. The tournament began with eight first round matches, the winners of which advanced to the round of the last 48 and had to play there with 24 other players against one of these players. The sixteen winners of this round met one of the remaining sixteen players in the round of the last 32, so that the winner was determined in the knockout system . In contrast to previous years, not all games were played in the same mode this time; while all games up to and including the quarter-finals were played in the best of 11 frames mode , the semi-finals and the final were played in the best of 17 frames mode.
World number one Steve Davis , who won the first two editions of the tournament and lost in the semifinals last year, did not take part this time, as in the following years.

Round of 48 to final
final
Last year's winner Tony Meo had no real problems throughout the tournament; apart from a white wash he lost three frames per game and defeated John Parrott and Willie Thorne , among others . In the final he met Les Dodd , who reached the final of a professional tournament for the first and only time in his career and had started in the round of 48 in the tournament. In addition to his first opponent Martin Smith , Dodd had also defeated Tony Knowles , Barry West and the reigning world champion Joe Johnson relatively clearly, only in his quarter-final game Dodd had problems when he only defeated Mike Hallett in the decider .
The final was a relatively clear affair: After Meo had taken the lead 3-0, Dodd was only able to get 3-1 to 4-2. Then Meo increased his lead to 6: 2 and later to 8: 3, before Dodd was able to win the next two frames to 8: 5, but then Meo won the 14th frame of the game and with it Won 9-5.
