final
Last year's finalist Steve Davis had reached the final with relatively clear victories over Jimmy White and ex-world champion Alex Higgins , where he met his compatriot Willie Thorne . In contrast to Davis, Thorne has come a much more difficult path; first he had defeated defending champion Dennis Taylor and then Tony Knowles in the decider .
Davis took a 3-0 lead before Thorne could win his first frame. Davis then extended his lead to 5: 1 before Thorne came up to 5: 2. After Davis took a 7-2 lead, Thorne took the third win of a frame. Davis then managed to restore the old gap before winning an '85 break match and tournament.
