Steve Duggan (born April 10, 1958 ) is a retired English snooker player who was a professional player for 14 seasons between 1983 and 1997. During this time he reached the quarter-finals of the Matchroom Trophy 1985 and the last sixteen of the Snooker World Championship in 1989 and ranked 35th in the world rankings.

Career

Duggan first drew attention to himself when he reached the quarter-finals of qualifying for the English Amateur Championship in 1980 . In 1982 he won the final against Kevin Lownds at the Pontins Autumn Open ; In 1983 he was eliminated from the English Amateur Championship in the second round of qualification. He then became a professional player.

First professional years and successes

Duggan's first professional season was the 1983/84 season and went very well for the Englishman, especially at the beginning. After he started the season with a participation in the round of 32 at the Professional Players Tournament , he was often eliminated early and was only able to win one game before being eliminated at the Classic . Nevertheless, he was immediately led on the world rankings, more precisely on rank 57. In the next season Duggan's form remained much more constant and he reached at least the second round for him in some tournaments, but had to accept a few opening defeats again. As a result, he slipped to 70th place on the world rankings.

The 1985/86 season was similar for Duggan : he was often eliminated after winning an opening game in the second round, but every now and then he did not even reach this. Only in the Matchroom Trophy did he get past the second round when he defeated Ray Reardon and later eliminated after beating Willie Thorne in the quarterfinals against Cliff Thorburn . On the world rankings, the best result of his career improved him with rank 35 to the best position of his career. The next season went a little better when he lost significantly fewer opening games and, in addition to two rounds of the last 32 , achieved a good result with the Classics round of 16 . Nevertheless, he lost two places on the world rankings.

But with the 1987/88 season Duggan had less success again; he lost several opening games and was eliminated twice in the second round for him. Only at the Snooker World Championship did he win two games in a row and thus move into the final qualifying round of the tournament, but missed the move to the Crucible Theater thanks to a defeat against John Virgo . In the spring of 1988 Duggan also managed a 148 break in a game against Mark Rowing at a local tournament in Doncaster . On the world rankings, however, he had already slipped to rank 50. Only after he was eliminated four times in the round of 32 in the following season and also again reached the final qualifying round at the Snooker World Championship , in which he moved into the main round with a clear win over John Spencer , where he reached the second round with a win over Cliff Wilson and in this defeated the eventual world champion Steve Davis , he improved again to rank 43.

Farewell to the top 64 and end of career

Over the entire 1989/90 season , Duggan was finally able to keep a good shape. Apart from a few unimportant, small tournaments, he reached two rounds of the last 32 at the Asian Open and was able to collect some world ranking points. He also reached the last sixteen at the Dutch Open amateur tournament , but lost to Mark Johnston-Allen . In the world rankings he improved to 41st place. After he had only reached the round of 32 in two non-ranking tournaments in the following season and was otherwise eliminated in ranked tournaments at the latest in the round of 64, he slipped on the World ranking on rank 63.

From now on, however, Duggan's form deteriorated noticeably: Already during the 1991/92 season he won only a quarter of his games, but celebrated a greater success with his entry into the round of 32 of the Classics . In the following season he won again only a few games and was only able to show participation in the third from last qualifying round of the World Snooker Championship as the best result. In the world rankings he had meanwhile slipped from 84th to 96th. It was not until the 1993/94 season that he was able to show some successes again when he reached the round of 32 at the Grand Prix as well as at the first and second event of the Strachan Challenge . Nevertheless, he continued to slide down the world rankings; he was downgraded to 139th place.

For the next two seasons, Duggan's form remained consistently poor. He won only a few games, was always eliminated in qualifying and only reached a few rounds of the last 128 and the round of the last 96 of the Welsh Open 1996 . With the end of the 1995/96 season , he played no more professional games. As a result, he fell on the world rankings to 228th place before he ended his professional career after fourteen seasons with the end of the 1996/97 season.
