The 32 qualifiers and 32 seeded players started on January 1st to determine the tournament winner in six rounds.

After Steve Davis took a 1-0 lead with a 73 break, Stephen Hendry was able to win three frames in a row to make it 3-1. But Davis managed the turnaround and turned the score to 5: 3. Hendry narrowed it to 5: 4, but Davis restored the old gap. Hendry made it 6: 5 with a 108 break and equalized one frame later. Davis got a 67 and a 99 break, so that he was 8: 6 in the lead. Hendry managed to equalize to 8: 8, but a 57 break in Davis' decider gave the latter the 23rd ranking tournament victory of his career.
