The Wilsons Classic 1980 was a snooker tournament as part of the 1979/80 season . The invitation tournament was won from January 7th to 8th, 1980 at New Century Hall in Manchester , England . The first winner of the new tournament was John Spencer , who defeated the Northern Irishman Alex Higgins 4: 3 in the final. Higgins played the tournament's highest break with a 75 break.

John Spencer started the match better and took a 2-0 lead by 64:46 and 51:50 in the first two frames. Alex Higgins countered with a 39:10 and equalized with a 19:97, playing a 75 break. Higgins also won the next frame, this time 70:26. Spencer managed the turnaround with a 67:29 and secured the tournament victory with a 90:30 in the decider .
