The 1990 Mercantile Credit Classic was a snooker tournament for the 1989/90 season that was held from January 2 to 13 at the Norbreck Castle Hotel in the northwestern city of Blackpool . For the fourth time in a row, the hotel was the venue. Overall, the tournament took place for the eleventh time.
Defending champion Doug Mountjoy was eliminated in the first round . The other favorites couldn't prevail either. With Steve James and the Australian Warren King , two underdogs made it into the final. James won 10-6, winning the only ranked title in his career.
Main tournament
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for the main tournament. The players from 33rd place played two qualifying rounds, which resulted in a further 32 players who were then drawn into the top 32. The tournament mode was changed significantly compared to the previous year and the tournament was shortened by a total of 3 days. Instead of Best of 17 , the two semi-finals were only played on Best of 11, so they were already decided in one session. The final was also shortened by one session: instead of Best of 25, only Best of 19 was played, which means that the winner only needed 10 instead of 13 frames to win.
