Career

Beginnings and first professional years

In 1982 Chappel took part in the Welsh Snooker Championship , where he failed in the semifinals to Terry Parsons . A year later Chappel took part in the southern elimination competition for the English Amateur Championship , but where he lost his opening game against Tony Jones with 7: 8 . Eventually he became a professional player for the 1984/85 season.

His first professional season began for Chappel with a 4-5 defeat against Bernie Mikkelsen at the International Open , before he advanced to the round of 32 after a second round defeat at the Grand Prix at the UK Championship and failed there against Kirk Stevens . After another opening defeat and a second round defeat, Chappel finally lost 8: 1 against Mike Hines his opening game in the World Cup qualifying . Chappel ended the season in a 6-0 loss at the Welsh Professional Championship to Terry Griffiths after beating Marcus Owen 6-0 . Due to his success at the UK Championship, he was listed on the world rankings for the coming season in 68th place.

The next season began with a move into the round of the last 32 of the Matchroom Trophy , before he reached the round of 32 at the UK Championship after a second round loss to Doug Mountjoy at the Grand Prix and was defeated there by Jimmy White . After he suffered an opening defeat at the Classic , he profited from Marcus Owens without a fight at the Welsh Professional Championship before he was again failed by Terry Griffiths. Chappel ended the season with two opening defeats at the British Open and in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship , but he was able to improve to 49th in the world rankings.

Promotion to world number 41

At the start of the 1986/87 season , Chappel reached the round of 64 three times in a row before he reached the semifinals after an opening defeat at the Classic at the Welsh Professional Championship with a win over Ray Reardon and lost there against Doug Mountjoy . He then reached the round of 96 at the British Open , before ending the season with wins over Mario Morra and Steve Duggan in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship and a 6:10 defeat by John Campbell in the final qualifying round. On the world rankings Chappel lost a few places, so that he was listed in the 58th world rankings in the following season.

Also at the start of the 1987/88 season , Chappel reached a round of the last 64, before he reached the round of 32 at the Grand Prix , where after victories over Frank Jonik and John Spencer , Terry Griffiths failed. He then got at the UK Championship victories over Dave Gilbert , Dean Reynolds and Steve Longworth , before he had to admit defeat to Joe Johnson in the round of 16 . Also in the Classic , more precisely in the round of 64, he failed to Johnson, before he in the Welsh Professional Championship after a victory over Colin Roscoe to Terry Griffiths. Shortly thereafter, he failed in the round of the last 64 of the British Open at the Scottish Stephen Hendry , before he failed for the second time in a row after victories over Nigel Gilbert and Graham Miles in the final qualifying round of the Snooker World Championship , this time against Tony Drago from Malta . In the world rankings, he improved to 51st place.

The 1988/89 season started with a move into the round of 64, before Chappel reached the round of 16 at the first event of the WPBSA non-ranking series and was eliminated from Martin Clark . He then reached a round of 64 two more times before reaching the semifinals at the second WPBSA non-ranking event with wins over Eddie Sinclair , Tommy Murphy , Jim Chambers and Brian Rowswell , where he failed to Paddy Browne . Finally, he also reached the round of 64 at the UK Championship before failing in the third non-ranking event in the round of 16 to Steve Longworth. He then defeated the Englishmen Mark Johnston-Allen , Steve Davis and Anthony Harris at the Classic , before failing in the round of 16 against Paddy Browne. After an opening defeat at the Welsh Professional Championship against Darren Morgan , he moved into the round of 32 at both the European Open and the British Open to lose. At the end of the season, however, he lost with 7:10 against Craig Edwards his opening game in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . On the world rankings he was able to improve by ten more places to 41st.

Up and down in the top 64

The 1989/90 season began for Chappel with an opening defeat, before he only reached the round of 64 at the Asian Open and the quarter-finals at the first event of the WPBSA non-ranking series . However, as a result, he suffered two opening defeats before he reached the round of 32 at the Dubai Classic with victories over Mark Wildman and Rex Williams and failed there against John Virgo . He then reached the semi-finals in the second non-ranking event before reaching the round of 64 in both the UK Championship and the Classic . He then reached the semifinals at the Welsh Professional Championship and lost there after defeating Cliff Wilson 8: 9 against Darren Morgan before failing at the British Open in the round of 64 to Dean Reynolds . Shortly thereafter, he reached the round of 16 at the European Open , where he lost to Stephen Hendry . At the end of the season, with the help of victories over Mario Morra , Barry Pinches and Martin Clark, he qualified for the main round of the Snooker World Championship at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield , where he failed in his only participation in this directly with 4:10 to Tony Knowles . Nevertheless, he slipped two places on the world rankings. Furthermore, Chappel took part in the course of the season in the Dutch Open , a Pro / Am event, where he defeated Guy Dennis and Murdo MacLeod and defeated Steve Newbury in the quarterfinals .

The following season began with two opening defeats, before Chappel moved into the semi-finals of the Asian Open with victories over Ray Edmonds , Cliff Thorburn , Dean Reynolds, Franky Chan and John Parrott and failed there to Dennis Taylor . He then reached the round of 32 of the UK Championship and after victories over Dave Gilbert , Peter Francisco and Martin Smith the quarterfinals of the Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship , where he failed 5-0 to James Wattana . He then reached the round of 32 at the Classic before reaching the round of 16 in the men's individual competition at the World Masters . He then lost in the semifinals of the Welsh Professional Championship to Mark Bennett , before losing to Steve Davis in the round of 64 after an opening defeat at the British Open at the European Open . However, Chappel ended the season with an opening defeat in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship when he lost to Jason Ferguson 9:10. Nevertheless, he improved on the world rankings to 37th place, which remained his best world rankings throughout his career.

The 191/92 season was catastrophic, however: In the first five tournaments he lost his opening games, in the remaining six tournaments he was always eliminated in the round of 64, for example at the Welsh Open against Tony Jones , at the Strachan Open against Danny Fowler or at the European Open against Jimmy White . As a result, Chappel slipped to 52nd place in the world rankings.

Years around the 50th place in the world rankings

The 1992/93 season began with a move into a round of the last 64, then Chappel moved with victories over Bradley Jones , Stephen Hendry and Eugene Hughes in the round of 16 of the Grand Prix , where he failed to Mark Bennett . He then suffered three early defeats before reaching the round of 32 in the second event of the Strachan Challenge . Shortly thereafter, he lost at the Welsh Open in the round of 64 against Ken Doherty , before suffering several defeats in the beginning. At the end of the season he defeated Colin Morton and Joe Grech in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship , before failing in the final qualifying round to Doug Mountjoy . In the world rankings he was able to improve slightly, so that he finished 48th in the following season.

The next season began with a move into the round of 32 of the Dubai Classics , before he reached the quarter-finals after an opening defeat at the Grand Prix at the Benson and Hedges Championship with wins over Jeff Cundy , Billy Snaddon , Stephen Murphy and John Rea lost to John Lardner . He then defeated the Pakistani Shokat Ali and the Welshman Mark Bennett at the UK Championship before losing to Darren Morgan in the round of 64 . After an opening defeat, he also moved into the same round at the Welsh Open , before failing to Rod Lawler after three further opening defeats at the Strachan Open in the round of 64 . However, Chappel ended the season with two more defeats, so that he was listed in the 53rd world rankings in the following season.

After an opening defeat at the start of the 1994/95 season , Chappel reached the round of 32 at the Grand Prix and the Benson and Hedges Championship , where he was eliminated. After a series of defeats at the beginning, he finally moved into the round of 64 at both the Welsh Open and the International Open , in which first Dave Harold and then Alain Robidoux were eliminated. After another opening defeat, he moved into the round of 32 at the Thailand Open after victories over Jason Weston, Joe Johnson and Neal Foulds , in which, however, David Roe was defeated. Shortly thereafter, he reached the round of 64 at the British Open before suffering another early defeat. At the end of the season he reached the final qualifying round in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship , but lost to Brian Morgan . On the world rankings he was able to hold his 53rd place.

Years in the top 50

At the beginning of the 1995/96 season , Chappel reached the round of 64 at the Thailand Classic before losing three opening games in a row. Then he reached the round of 64 at the German Open , before defeating the Englishmen Steve Duggan and Andy Hicks as well as his compatriot Terry Griffiths at the Welsh Open and finally failed in the second round to Darren Morgan . After an opening defeat at the International Open , Chappel moved into the quarter-finals at the European Open with victories over Graeme Dott , Alan McManus and Stephen Lee , to lose to Andy Hicks. He then reached the round of the last 64 of the Thailand Open to end the season after an opening defeat at the British Open with a participation in the penultimate qualifying round for the World Snooker Championship and a defeat there against Nick Walker . On the world rankings, he was able to improve to 45th place.

The following season began with a series of early defeats before Chappel defeated Danny Fowler at the UK Championship and then failed to Mark Williams . Shortly afterwards he reached the round of 48 at the German Open with victories over Karl Burrows and Paul Hunter , in which Jason Ferguson had to admit defeat. Shortly afterwards he defeated Robin Hull , Alan McManus and Lee Richardson at the Welsh Open , before failing in the second round to Mark King . After losing to Mark Williams shortly after at the International Open in the round of 64, he reached the round of 32 at the European Open , where he lost to Peter Ebdon . He then reached a round of 64 two more times before ending the season with a 6-10 loss to Graham Horne in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . In the world rankings, Chappel only lost one place, making him 46th in the following season.

At the start of the 1997/98 season , Chappel suffered several defeats at the beginning - if you omit two victories through non-fighting tasks of the respective opponent, before he reached the round of 32 at the Welsh Open with victories over Mark Gray and the then reigning world champion Ken Doherty and failed there at Mark King. He then defeated his compatriot Lee Walker at the Scottish Open , only to fail at John Higgins . This was followed by a place in the last 48 of the Thailand Masters , where he had to admit defeat to Dave Harold . Finally, Chappel ended the season with two opening defeats, so that he lost a world rankings for the second time in a row.

Last professional years

The deep cut for Chappel followed with the 1998/99 season , during which he was able to win only three of 13 games. He had already suffered two opening defeats before he defeated Wayne Jones at the UK Championship and then failed to Anthony Hamilton . Again an opening defeat followed, before he could win two games at the Welsh Open before losing to Patrick Wallace in the round of 32 . However, he lost the remaining opening games of the season without exception, so that he fell to 76th place in the world rankings.

The following season began with numerous defeats before he won at least one game in four tournaments - starting at the China Open and ending at the Thailand Masters - and was only eliminated in the round of 96. After losing another opening game at the Scottish Open , he defeated the Englishmen Paul Sweeny and Martin Clark in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship before failing in the round of 64 against Michael Judge from Ireland . On the world rankings, he slipped to 90th place.

At the start of the 2000/01 season , Chappel won his first round game again several times, only to lose immediately afterwards. However, after losing his opening game at the UK Championship , he reached the round of 64 at the China Open and the round of 96 at the Welsh Open , where he lost to Michael Judge and Gerard Greene . Chappel then ended the season with three opening defeats, the last of which as a 9-10 defeat by Jason Barton in World Cup qualification . This defeat should be the last professional game for Chappel. Meanwhile crashed to the 115th place in the world ranking list, he ended his professional career after 17 seasons as a professional player.

Amateur career

Right in the next season Chappel took part in both the Benson and Hedges Championship and three events on the Challenge Tour , but remained without a win. It was only when he qualified as an amateur for the World Snooker Championship that he defeated Karan Chand, Sean O'Neill and Mehmet Husnu , before failing in the fifth qualifying round to Jason Weston . In the following year Chappel only took part in the Benson and Hedges Championship , where he failed after defeating Jason Pegram to Anthony Hamilton .

His next matches as an amateur at the professional level were carried out as part of the 2011 World Seniors Championship , when, after victories over Jimmy O'Shea and David Taylor in the final qualifying round to David Taylor failed. A year later, Chappel took part again in the World Seniors Championship and reached the main round with victories over Stefan Mazrocis , Ian Barry Stark and Patsy Fagan , where he in turn Tony Drago and Alain Robidoux to meet New Zealander Dene O'Kane in the semi-finals . With a 2-1 victory over this Chappel reached his first professional final almost a decade after the end of his professional career. There, however, he lost 2-0 to Nigel Bond .

Another year later , however, Chappel lost after defeating David Singh against Patrick Wallace in the third qualifying round. In 2013 he no longer had to qualify and was able to start directly in the round of 16, where he defeated Alain Robidoux and then lost to Steve Davis . The next year , this privilege was lost again and Chappel defeated Richard Somauroo , Anthony Davies and Dave Harold in qualifying before losing to his compatriot Dominic Dale in the decisive qualifying round . Also in 2016 Chappel had to qualify, which he achieved through victories over Imran Puri and Jamie Burnett ; before he was eliminated in the round of 24 against Anthony Hamilton. However, from there the tournament became an amateur tournament of the World Seniors Tour , so that Chappel no longer participated.

In 2017, Chappels took part in the Welsh Snooker Championship , where he lost directly to Darren Morgan. After taking a break in 2018, he took part in the national championship again in 2019, but lost his opening game again, this time against Jackson Page .
