Welsh Snooker Championship
The Welsh Snooker Championship is a national competition to determine the Welsh champion of snooker billiards .
history
The competition was held for the first time in 1928, the first winner was J. Emrys Harris. The first serial winner was Tom Jones , who won from 1930 to 1936 and 1947. No competition was held from 1940 to 1945 during World War II . In the 1950s, the later six-time world champion Ray Reardon won the competition six times. His toughest competitor was John Ford , who won in 1949 and made it to the finals five times by 1955. Ford also played a bigger role in the 1960s - along with Des Meredith , Mario Berni and Lynn O'Neill . Also in the 1960s and 1970s the Welsh snooker championship produced a world champion and a runner-up world champion. Doug Mountjoy , who won the competition in 1968 and 1976, was runner-up in 1982; Terry Griffiths was to become world champion four years after winning the 1975 title. Other defining players of the 1970s were Geoff Thomas and Alwyn Lloyd , who won the competition one or three times and made it to the final four or two times.
At the same time as the snooker boom among professional players, Welsh amateur sport became more professional. There were eight winners in the 1980s and nine in the following decade. In the new millennium, numerous amateurs have made it through the Welsh Snooker Championship.
Acting Master is Darren Morgan .
