New Zealand Snooker Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Zealand Snooker Championship is a competition to determine the national champion of snooker billiards in New Zealand .

history

As in many of the British Commonwealth of Nations , New Zealand has a long tradition of billiards and snooker. An annual national amateur championship has been recorded since the end of World War II. A women's championship was held for the first time in 1990, while youth and senior competitions have only existed since the 2000s.

Title holder

The record holder of the title is L. Stout, who was champion seven times between 1948 and 1956. Like many players, especially in the early years, he was also successful in English Billiards and won the title there too. In 1952, he became the first player to win both titles in one year. Apart from him, only Tom Yesberg (1964) and Lance Napper (1965) made it. Dave Meredith was a snooker champion in the late 1970s and then became a record holder of 15 billiards in the 80s and 90s. He is one of 5 players with 4 snooker titles. Besides himself, Bill Harcourt, Harry Haenga, his son Daniel Haenga and Chris McBreen managed to do it . McBreen played one season as a professional on the Snooker Main Tour . Besides him, only one master also turned pro: Dene O'Kane . At 17, he was also the youngest title holder for a long time until he was replaced in 2016 by Louis Chand, who was also 17 years old when he won, but was 17 days younger. In addition to father and son Haenga with 8 “family titles”, there were two related masters: The brothers Glen and Dale Kwok alternated between the titles from 1981 to 1984 and together won 5 championships.

The endgame pairings are not fully recorded in the main sources, which is why the following list is incomplete. In the case of multiple winners, the superscript number indicates the total number of titles for the first win.
