John David Rheinallt Jones

John David Rheinallt Jones (born July 5, 1884 in Llanrug, North Wales , † January 30, 1953 ), often just J. D. Rheinallt Jones , giving his middle name J. D. Rheinallt Jones , was a Welsh-South African publisher and Senator of the South African Union . He founded the journal Bantu Studies at Witwatersrand University in 1921 , and served as its editor.

From 1929 as secretary, from 1944 to 1947 as president and finally in 1950 as director of the South African Institute of Race Relations , he campaigned for more rights for the disadvantaged peoples of South Africa. In this capacity, Jones supported the founding of The Bantu World , a weekly newspaper for blacks, in 1932 .

Jones was also involved in the scouting movement in South Africa. In 1933 he was chief scout in the Union of South Africa.

On the basis of the 1936 Representation of Natives Act , Jones was elected Senator for the non-European population of the Transvaal and Orange Free States in the Senate of the Union of South Africa from 1937 to 1942 .
