Gareth Allen (born September 9, 1988 ) is a Welsh snooker player from Ewloe in Flintshire in north-east Wales.

Career

When he was three, Gareth Allen was given a child-sized snooker table and has been playing at standard tables in clubs since he was 12. In his youth he was a very successful player in his North Wales homeland and since he was 18 he has been a regular member of the Wales national team in international team competitions. His first major success in the senior division was in 2010 when he reached the final of the Welsh Championship and shortly afterwards he made it to the last 16 at the Amateur World Championship in Syria. In the same year, at the Paul Hunter Classic, he took part for the first time in a tournament on the Snooker Main Tour that was open to amateurs and made it into the main round straight away. The following year he played all twelve tournaments of the Players Tour Championship and reached the main round seven times.

Until his successful year 2010, the Welshman had worked full-time in the IT industry. This year he also reached number three in the Welsh snooker rankings and was able to apply for funding from the Welsh Sports Council. He reduced his working hours and finally gave up the job in 2012 to concentrate entirely on snooker. That same year he tried his hand at Q School and missed out on a win in the second tournament to qualify for the Snooker Main Tour . He lost the final of his qualifying group to Paul Davison . His good Q-School result brought him way up in the amateur ranking, so that he was one of the players invited to fill the open places in the qualifying rounds of the major world ranking tournaments. The 2012/13 season began for him with his best result to date at a PTC tournament, reaching the round of 32 at the first tournament in Gloucester , where he defeated Alfie Burden , among others . He mostly lost the qualifying games of the ranking tournaments, only at his home tournament, the Welsh Open , he won against Rory McLeod and reached the second round. Despite the experience he gained, he did worse in the Q School this time than last year. At the European Championship he achieved his best result in the amateur field and only had to admit defeat in the final against the Finn Robin Hull, who is experienced in the Main Tour . But he also missed the second opportunity this season to achieve professional status.

The following year, Allen was able to repeat his placement among the last 32 at the Gdynia Open . But he again missed several opportunities for the Main Tour qualification. In addition to the poor performance in the Q School, he lost the qualifying game in the EBSA Qualifying Tour . At the European Championships he lost in the round of 16 against the eventual winner Mitchell Mann . Also in the 2014/15 season , after a decent PTC tour with twice reaching the last 64, the EBSA Amateur Play Offs did not bring him the desired success and he failed in the quarterfinals. At the second Q School tournament , he finally managed to march through his group in the fifth attempt and win the group against his friend and training partner Alex Taubman. This secured him the Main Tour participation for the next two seasons.

The 2015/16 season began with a first win at the Australian Open . For the second time in his career, he had reached the second qualifying round of a world ranking tournament.
