Rhydian Richards (born December 8, 1975 in Merthyr Tydfil ) is a Welsh snooker player who won the Welsh Snooker Championship in 2017 .

Career

Richards was born in Merthyr Tydfil , South Wales , in 1975 and was still living there at least in the late 2010s. As a snooker player, he first drew attention to himself when he lost only nine games to David Morris in the group phase of the IBSF World Grand Prix - a substitute tournament for the omitted amateur world championship - in 2006 and thus reached the main round, in which he immediately against Simon Zammit lost. Five years later he reached the round of 16 at the Welsh Snooker Championship , but was defeated in this by David John . In the same year he moved to the Amateur World Cup again in the main round, but retired there again with the first game when he lost this time to Kevin Van Hove . After losing again in the round of 16 of the Welsh Championship in 2012, he did not survive this round in 2013 either.

In 2015 Richards made it into the main round of the amateur world championship again , but lost there again in the first game, this time against his compatriot Ben Jones . After a mediocre participation in the Welsh Championship, however, he had great success at the 2016 European Championship and defeated several good amateurs before he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Jamie Rhys Clarke in the semifinals . In the same year he succeeded in the amateur world championship for the first time in the main round by defeating Iwan Kakowski , but then lost to Lukas Kleckers . At the Welsh Championship, however, he was able to record his next great success when he defeated Kishan Hirani and reached the final, in which he was crowned champion against the Welsh top amateur Darren Morgan .

In the same year he reached the second round of the main round again at the amateur world championship and lost there against an insignificant player from Pakistan. In 2018 he was given a wildcard for the professional Welsh Open , in which he qualified for the main round thanks to a victory over Darren Morgan in the wildcard round, even if he was narrowly defeated by David Grace . After losing to Tyler Rees in the first sixteen of the Welsh Championship in 2019, he took part in various senior tournaments and was able to reach the first main round of the World Seniors Championship . In 2020 he was defeated by the Scottish Ross Muir in the round of 16 of the European Championship , while he had already survived the round of 16 in the Welsh championship, but then the tournament was postponed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic . In 2020 he will also take part in the Q School .
