The UK Championship 1988 was a snooker tournament as part of the 1988/89 snooker season , which was held from November 11 to 27, 1988 in the Guild Hall in Preston . The tournament was won for the second time since 1978 by Welsh Doug Mountjoy . He defeated Stephen Hendry from Scotland in the final 16:12. This had thrown defending champion and series winner Steve Davis out of the tournament in the semifinals . For the fifth time the result of the UK Championship was part of the world rankings and for the Englishman it was the first loss in Preston since then.
Prize money
Almost £ 400,000 in prize money was awarded this year, just under £ 45,000 more than last year. The winning bonus increased by £ 10,000 to £ 80,000.

qualification
128 players entered the tournament, 96 players had to qualify to reach the main tournament. The 32 players who survived the three qualifying rounds then competed against the 32 seeded players.
