Career

First professional years and successes

The South African Ellis, who in 1979 and 1980, the South African Snooker Championship had won, was the 1986/87 season professional players and achieved with wins over Roy Amdor , Perrie Mans and Jimmy van Rensberg already in his first tournament, the South African Professional Championship , which Final, which he lost, however, with 1: 9 against Silvino Francisco . However, the rest of the season was much worse when he could not win a single game in four tournaments on his own and could only win a game at the British Open against Martin Smith before losing to Paul Medati here as well . Nevertheless, from now on Ellis was listed at number 116 in the world list.

The same went the next season , when he was again unable to win a game on his own in four ranked tournaments and was only able to win an opening game at the UK Championship against Dessie Sheehan before he was eliminated by Fred Davis here. However, he reached a little later with a victory over Robbie Grace again the final of the South African Professional Championship , where he was able to win a professional tournament for the only time with a 9: 4 victory over Jimmy van Rensberg . But since this success had no impact on the world rankings, Ellis lost three places on this.

In contrast to the previous seasons, the 1988/89 season was a little better, even if, for example , lost a total of five opening games at the South African Professional Championship . However, he moved to the UK Championship , the Classic , at the European Open and the World Snooker Championship each with a victory in the Round of 96, where he previously at the Grand Prix with wins over Eric Lawlor and Marcel Gauvreau the Round of 64 and had lost in this to Dennis Taylor . As a result, he was ranked 105th in the world, which remained his best world ranking for the rest of his career.

Last professional years

However, as early as the 1989/90 season Ellis' form deteriorated again when he was only able to win his opening game in two tournaments: He was eliminated from the International Open after a victory over Eddie Sinclair against Tommy Murphy while he was at defeated both Nick Terry and Warren King at the European Open and was only eliminated in the round of 64 against Eddie Charlton . In the world rankings he only lost one place and was now placed 106th.

But the next season was miserable for Ellis when he couldn't win a single game and fell to 119th place on the world rankings. In the 1991/92 season he won a long time no play until he at the European Open in 1992 only Karl Payne defeated and then from the noncombat mission by Ian Brumby profited before with 1: 5 against Kirk Stevens lost. This game eventually became the last professional game for Ellis, as he lost his world rankings at the end of the season and as an unset player did not play any more games until he ended his professional career at the end of the 1992/93 season.

Further life

Despite the lost professional status, Ellis did not stop playing snooker and so reached the round of 32 of the amateur world championship in 1998 and the semi-finals of the South African snooker championship in 2001 . A year later he moved into the semi-finals of the African Snooker Championship before taking part in the Amateur World Championship again that same year without any major success . He also reached the finals of the South African Snooker Championship, but lost 5: 7 to Warren Horsley .

After reaching the quarter-finals of the South African championship in 2004, he moved into the round of 48 of the amateur world championship four years later , before losing to Mohamed El Hamy in the 2009 game for third place . In the same year he took part in the World Games for South Africa , where he lost his opening game.

In 2017 Ellis reached the quarter-finals of the South African championship, but lost to Richard Halliday , and on the other hand lost in the finals of the South African 6-Red championship with 3: 7 against Mutalieb Allie .
