The ICI European Open 1990 was a snooker tournament of the 1989/90 season that was held from March 10th to 16th. The second edition of the tournament took place in France again, but it moved from the north to the southeast to Lyon , where the Palais de Sports was the venue. Imperial Chemical Industries was the sponsor for the second time.
Last year's winner John Parrott made it to the final again and met the reigning world champion Stephen Hendry . The Englishman successfully defended his title with a 10-6 win, winning a ranking tournament for the second time in his career.
Main tournament
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for the main tournament. The players from 33rd place played two qualifying rounds, which resulted in a further 32 players who were then drawn into the top 32. The tournament mode remained the same up to the quarter-finals, in the semi-finals it was increased from Best of 9 to Best of 11. The final was also increased by one winning frame: only once in tournament history ( 1993 ) was the final played on 10 winning frames (best of 19).
