Robby Foldvari (* 2. June 1960 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian Snooker - and English-Billiards player who spent the one from 1985 to 1997 thirteen years as a professional snooker player, at this time with the first WPBSA Non-Ranking 1989 a won professional snooker tournament and later, in 2006, also became Australian champion and, on the other hand, became world champion in English billiards in 1986 and was able to repeat this success at amateur level in 1998 .

Career

Foldvari, the son of a furniture maker from Hungary , started playing bagatelle at the age of ten and finally began playing snooker a year later , first on a small snooker table built by his father and later on larger tables in his family's garage. After he had to stop playing Australian football due to health problems , Foldvari finally trained up to seven hours a day and was also supported by Edward James O'Donoghue . Foldvari received his Bachelor of Economics from Monash University in 1980 and then worked as an accountant at the BHP Group . However, he won the Australian English Billiards Championship in 1982 and 1983 and also moved into the quarter-finals of the Australian Snooker Championship in 1983, whereupon he quit his job in 1983 and with the help of Eddie Charlton became a professional player in June 1984.

First professional years

For the Australian, Foldvari's first professional season mainly contained early defeats in qualifying or in the round of the last 64, mostly the first main round. His best result stand next to a quarter-final participation in the non-ranking tournament Australian Professional Championship to participate in the Round of 32 at the Classic . Nevertheless, he was on the world rankings done with rank 62 highest on Foldvaris World No. his career.

In the following season , Foldvari was eliminated, mainly in the qualifying rounds or in the round of the last 64. Again he reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Professional Championship as well as the final qualifying round of the Snooker World Championship , in which John Parrott lost. In the 1986/87 season , during which he was thus out in 69th place, went for him with the same, where he reached the semifinals of the Australian Professional Championship for the first time , but apart from that did not come out of the round of 64. This meant slipping to 79th place on the world rankings. In 1986, he was only the second Australian after Walter Lindrum to win the English Billiards World Championship with a 3-1 victory over Norman Dagley . As a result, Foldvari was shortlisted for the athlete of the year election , but lost to Pat Cash . Also in 1987 he reached the final of the tournament, but lost 1: 3 to Norman Dagley. Following this, however, Foldvari said he would step up his commitment to snooker, which was also due to the fact that, unlike snooker in the 1980s, English Billiards was a breadless art.

Years of success

As in previous seasons, Foldvari was eliminated early in the 1987/88 season with two defeats each in the round of 64 or in qualification, but apart from that, reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Masters invitation tournament and the semifinals of the Australian Professional Championship ; in terms of ranked tournaments, however, the final qualifying round of the Snooker World Championship and the round of the last 32 of the International Open . On the world rankings he improved thirteen places to 66th place.

In the next season , however, Foldvari's form deteriorated significantly when he did not come out of the round of 64 in a single ranking tournament, which he only reached in two cases. Foldvari was also largely unable to achieve good results with regard to other non-ranking tournaments, but shortly after the start of the season he had reached the final of the Australian Professional Championship for the first time , in its last edition, with an 8: 4 win over Warren King However, he had to admit defeat to John Campbell 7: 9 . As a result, he deteriorated by eleven places on the world rankings.

Also in the 1989/90 season Foldvari fell primarily in the qualification and again only reached the round of 64 twice, where he was also eliminated. However, with regard to the only non-ranking tournament of the season in which he participated, he managed a surprise when he defeated Tony Chappel and David Taylor , among others , and thus reached the final of the tournament, where he achieved an 8: 1- Beating Welshman Darren Morgan for the only time in his career who won a professional snooker tournament. Nevertheless, he slipped to 100th place in the world rankings. In 1990 Foldvari also won the last edition of the Soviet Snooker Open.

Foldvari's tendency to lose early did not change in the following season , when he was largely eliminated again in the round of the last 64 at the latest. He had again in a non-ranking tournament, the Benson and Hedges Satellite Championship , when he retired a little more success only in the round of 32 while in he British Open among other victories over Cliff Wilson and Neal Foulds the Reached the round of 16 and had to admit defeat in this Mike Hallett . As a result, he improved significantly on the world rankings to 68th place. Also in 1991 Foldvari again reached the final of the English Billiards World Championships , but was defeated by the Englishman Mike Russell with 957: 1352 . In the same year he became the first overseas player to win the UK Professional Billiards Championship .

Last professional years

The process of the gradually deteriorating form of Foldvaris continued in the following years. While he reached the round of 64 in three ranking tournaments in 1991/92 , this was only the case in three minor ranking tournaments in the next season . Even though he finally reached the round of the last 64 in the 1993/94 snooker season at both the Grand Prix and the International Open as well as a non-ranking tournament, by the end of this season he had slipped to 126th place in the world rankings.

Already in the 1994/95 season , participation in the round of the last 96 of the British Open Foldvaris was the best result of the season. During the following season he reached the same round at both the UK Championship and the German Open , but also as an Australian team captain appeared at the World Cup , during the 1996/97 season he finally only made it into this round at the Grand Prix . Crashed to world number 176, Foldvari finally ended his professional snooker career at the end of the season after thirteen years.

Further life

After Foldvari had initially unsuccessfully participated in qualifying tournaments and in the Australian Snooker Championship after the end of his professional career , he soon achieved some success as an amateur. In the same year he won the World Matchplay Billiards Championship , which was followed by more victories in mostly smaller tournaments in the following years. In 1998 he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open Championship , in the same year he won 1869: 1439 over Praprut Chaithanasakun in the final of the amateur world championship in English Billiards and in 2000 he reached the final of the OBSF Snooker Ocean Championship , in which, however, he beat Neil with 1: 8 Robertson lost.

In the years that followed, Foldvari regularly took part in national and international tournaments and continued to enjoy regular success. He moved into the quarter-finals of the amateur world championship in 2004 , before winning the Australian snooker championship for the first time in 2006 with a 6-3 victory over Matthew Bolton . In the following years Foldvari got two entries into the semi-finals of the Australian Snooker Championship and one entry into the same round of the Amateur World Championship 2008 . He also won the Australian Masters Snooker Championship in 2008, the senior equivalent of the Australian Snooker Championship. In the new decade, Foldvari gradually withdrew and eventually took part in the Australian and Oceanic championships without much success. He also appeared as a snooker commentator on Fox Sport from 2011 . Then Foldvari concentrated on pool and won various national tournaments. In 2019 he returned briefly when he acted as "ambassador of the tournament" at the English Billiards World Cup held in his hometown of Melbourne .

Foldvari is also an officially recognized snooker trainer by the World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association and was the national trainer of Singapore and the People's Republic of China in the 1990s and later - according to his own statements - as the trainer of Vinnie Calabrese . He is also the father of two children.
