Pat Cash (born May 27, 1965 in Melbourne ) is a retired Australian tennis player .

Career

It was foreseeable early on that Pat Cash would one day become a great tennis player. In 1981 he led the youth rankings, in 1982 he won the junior competitions of the Grand Slam tournaments at Wimbledon and the US Open.

In 1982 Cash turned pro and won his home tournament in Melbourne as a 17-year-old in his debut season. The following year he was nominated for the Australian Davis Cup team , which reached the final in 1983 . With his win over Joakim Nyström, Cash played a major role in the 3-2 win against Sweden . The Australian is still the youngest player to have played a Davis Cup final and won a match there.

In 1984 he reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and at the US Open . But Cash wasn't just a good individual player, in 1984 and 1985 he reached the double-finals at Wimbledon.

In 1986 Pat Cash won the Davis Cup again with Australia, when Sweden were again defeated 3-2.

In 1987 he reached the final of the Australian Open , which he lost to Stefan Edberg in an exciting five-sentence thriller. It was the last match played on grass at the Australian Open.

The greatest success for the serve-and-volley player was undoubtedly the triumph in the men's singles at Wimbledon in 1987, when defending champion Boris Becker surprisingly failed in the second round. Cash defeated old master Jimmy Connors in the semifinals and then number 1, Ivan Lendl, in the final .

The following year he reached the final at the Australian Open for the second time, which he lost again to a Swede, namely Mats Wilander . In 1990 Cash was again in the Davis Cup final, this time the Australians lost 3-2 to the USA . Pat Cash won 31 of his 41 Davis Cup games between 1983 and 1990.

In his homeland, people had long hoped that Pat Cash could build on the tradition of the great Australian tennis players such as Roy Emerson or Rod Laver . But because of his many injuries, he was never able to follow in their footsteps.

End of career

In addition to tennis, music was Pat Cash's great passion. Today he runs a tennis school and occasionally works as a co-commentator. In retrospect, he attracted attention by saying that Roger Federer would never be able to win Wimbledon. On January 4th, 2006 Pat Cash joined the Indian Karan Rastogi for a one-time comeback at the tournament in Chennai in the doubles competition. They lost against the German doubles Alexander Waske and Rainer Schüttler 2: 6, 2: 6. In 2018 he played a mixed match at the Hopman Cup 2018 .

In the 2006 media season , Cash was used for the men's 40 team at TC BW Issum. He won his only game in the Niederrheinliga 6-0, 6-1.
