The Australian Davis Cup team is the national tennis team of Australia that represents the country in the Davis Cup . The Davis Cup is the most important competition for national teams in men's tennis, analogous to the Fed Cup for women. With a total of 28 victories, it is one of the most successful national teams in tennis after the US team .

history

Australia has participated in the Davis Cup since 1905 . In the beginning, Australia and New Zealand formed a team known as the Australasian team . As early as 1907 , the first final against the United Kingdom could be reached, which went 3-2 for Australia. The success could be repeated in the following two years and 1911 , this time against the United States . From 1912 Australia entered the Davis Cup as an independent country without New Zealand. In 1914 and 1919 further victories could be celebrated.

From 1920 , the United States, France, and the United Kingdom each dominated the Davis Cup, one after the other. During this time Australia managed to reach the finals six times, all of which were lost. In 1939 the team won a final again after 20 years, this time against the United States 3-2. After the Second World War , the Australian team began a longer phase of dominance. From 1950 to 1967 she won the Davis Cup a total of 15 times. After beating the United States in 1973 , Australia won five more times, including a. against Sweden , France and most recently against the Spanish team in 2003 .

The most successful single player is Lleyton Hewitt , who won 42 out of 56 games. In doubles, Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde were the most successful duo with 14: 2 wins.
