Alex de Minaur (Spanish: Álex de Miñaur ; born February 17, 1999 in Sydney ) is an Australian tennis player .

Career

Alex de Minaur was born in Sydney to a Spaniard and an Uruguayan. When he was five years old, he moved to Alicante in Spain with his family . Although living in Spain again, de Minaur continues to compete for Australia. He is fluent in English, Spanish and French.

Juniors Tour

De Minaur played on the ITF Juniors Tour for the first time in 2012 at the age of 13. He achieved his greatest successes there in his last year there in 2016: At the Australian Open , he advanced to the semi-finals in singles , while he even won the title in doubles with his partner Blake Ellis . At the French Open he also reached the semi-finals with Ellis. At Wimbledon de Minaur achieved his best individual result when he lost in the final to Denis Shapovalov . After the US Open 2016 , he ended his junior career, where his best performance was the semi-finals last year , where he was defeated by Tommy Paul . So he was in three of the four Junior Grand Slam tournaments at least in the semi-finals of the individual competition. He achieved his best placement in early 2016 with second place.

Professional tour

De Minaur first appeared on the Profi Tour 2015 at a tournament of the third-class ITF Future Tour , but it was not until the beginning of 2016 that he was able to win several matches in Spain for the first time and reach a future final. In October of the same year, the Australian surprised when he was able to reach the final in Eckental at his third tournament on the second-rate ATP Challenger Tour , starting from the qualification . After winning seven matches in a row, Steve Darcis was too strong there. The success helped him to jump in the world rankings , so that he finished the year on his previous highest position 354.

At the beginning of 2017, de Minaur was able to compete in some tournaments of the ATP World Tour in Australia thanks to wildcards . In Brisbane he fought his way through the qualification and lost in the first main round to Mischa Zverev , while a week later in Sydney after a win against Benoît Paire it even reached the round of 16. He also made a good debut in his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne and defeated Gerald Melzer in five sets at the beginning before losing to Sam Querrey in round two . In the course of the rest of the year, thanks to his ranking, he was mostly able to compete at Challengers, where he reached his first final in Segovia . In Roland Garros he failed at the beginning to Robin Haase , in Wimbledon in the qualification. At the start of the US Open he was eliminated from Dominic Thiem . At the end of the season he was ranked 208.

At the beginning of the 2018 season he reached the semifinals in Brisbane and then his first final on the World Tour in Sydney . In this he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev 6: 1, 4: 6 and 5: 7. After the first round in Melbourne , he made his debut against Germany for the Australian Davis Cup team . In his first game he was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the tie-break of the fifth set. He won his first title on the Challenger Tour in June 2018. After failing to Jérémy Chardy in the final in Surbiton the previous week , he won in Ilkley against Daniel Evans from Britain in straight sets.

During the 2019 season , de Minaur won his first three titles: he won the tournaments in Sydney , Atlanta and Zhuhai . At the US Open he reached his first round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament and, like last year, was in the final of the Next Generation ATP Finals , which he lost in three sets against Jannik Sinner . In the world rankings, he achieved a new career high with position 18 on October 28, 2019.
