Jannik Sinner (born August 16, 2001 in San Candido , South Tyrol ) is an Italian tennis player . In 2019 he won the Next Gen ATP Finals for the best players under 21 as the youngest and lowest-placed player to date .

Career

Started as a skier and switched to professional tennis

Sinner, who grew up in Sexten , played tennis for the first time when he was three years old, but never intensively until he was nine. Instead, he was active as a skier and became Italian champion in giant slalom in 2008 and vice-Italian champion in 2012. Thanks to his tennis coach Heribert Mayr , he made the decision to concentrate on professional tennis instead of a ski career.

At the age of 14 he went to the Piatti Tennis training center in Bordighera , Liguria , which is run by Riccardo Piatti and Massimo Sartori, Andreas Seppi's trainer . He played his first games on the professional tour in 2018 on the lower class ITF Future Tour . He won his first game at the Sharm El Sheikh tournament earlier this year against the top 800 player Aryan Goveas. In May he made it to the quarterfinals of an ITF tournament for the first time in Casale Monferrato . In August he reached the final at the tournament in St. Christina in Val Gardena for the first time, but had to admit defeat to the German top 400 player Peter Heller in two sets. Thanks to this success, Sinner made it into the top 1000 in the world rankings for the first time , and he also won his first double title at the same tournament. Thanks to a wildcard , the South Tyrolean was able to play in the main draw of the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time in Como , but lost his opening game against the top 200 player Andrej Martin in two sets. He won his first game on Challenger level in October at the tournament in Ortisei in Val Gardena , where he - also with a wildcard - defeated the top 700 player Luca Giacomini in two sets. In the last sixteen he lost 7: 6 (8: 6), 5: 7, 5: 7 to the top 200 player Constant Lestienne .

2019: First Challenger title and NextGen success

Sinner won his first Challenger title in February 2019 in Bergamo at only his third tournament. He was again in the main draw thanks to a wildcard and beat two top 200 players on the way to the final with Salvatore Caruso and Gianluigi Quinzi . In the final he beat his compatriot Roberto Marcora in 72 minutes with 6: 3, 6: 1. Overall, he won this tournament - 546th in the world rankings - against six players, none of whom were worse than 301st place. He is the first player born in 2001 and the youngest Italian to win a Challenger title. By winning the tournament, he improved by over 200 places in the world rankings and achieved his highest ranking to date with 324th place. On March 3, 2019, Sinner also won his first ITF tournament in Trento, and on March 31, 2019, his next tournament victory followed at the ITF tournament in Santa Margherita di Pula . In both tournaments he only gave one set.

At the Hungarian Open at the end of April, Sinner received a wildcard for qualification and was able to take part in his first ATP tournament as a lucky loser, where he also won his first victory at this tournament level against Máté Valkusz . As a result of these successes, he rose to the top 300 in the world rankings for the first time on April 29 (298th place). At the Challenger tournament in Ostrava a week later, where he was only defeated in the final Kamil Majchrzak , he succeeded with the quarter-final victory against Jiří Veselý for the first time a victory over a top 100 player. For the Masters 1000 in Rome he received a wildcard from the organizer for the main field, where he won the two following sets 6: 1 and 7: 5 in the first round against Steve Johnson after 1: 6 in the first set, and thus for the first time won against a top 100 player in an ATP Tour tournament. In the second round he lost against number 7 in the world Stefanos Tsitsipas with 3: 6, 2: 6, but climbed further in the world rankings to 229th place.

At the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon at the end of May, Sinner lost in the first main round to the lucky loser Tristan Lamasine 0: 6, 6: 7 (5: 7), whom he himself lost 6: 4, 6 in the second qualifying round: 3 and thus qualified for the main draw of the tournament. After successful qualification and the subsequent first round defeat against Nicolás Jarry at the ATP 250 tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch , Sinner failed in the qualification at the subsequent higher-ranking tournaments in Halle and Wimbledon . At the ATP 250 tournament in Umag in mid-July, on the other hand, after successfully qualifying, he also won the first round against Pedro Sousa and was able to place himself in the top 200 of the world rankings for the first time - despite defeat in the second round against Aljaz Bedene (199th place) . At the Challenger in Lexington , Sinner was placed third and was able to win the tournament in the final against Alex Bolt , who narrowly defeated him in the Wimbledon qualification. At the US Open 2019 , Sinner qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in the second attempt. Even if he had to admit defeat to Stan Wawrinka in the first round , he could at least win a set.

At the beginning of October he succeeded in the Challenger tournament of Mouilleron-le-Captif, where he reached the semi-finals, with the victory in the quarter-finals against Marius Copil again a success against a top 100 player. A week later, at the ATP 250 tournament in Antwerp , he defeated Gaël Monfils, who was 13th in the world rankings, by a clear 6: 3, 6: 2 in the round of 16 and, after beating Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals, was only defeated in the semi-finals, where he was with 3: 6, 2: 6 again to Stan Wawrinka failed. At the ATP 500 tournament a week later in Vienna , after a first round win against Philipp Kohlschreiber, as in the previous week, there was a duel with Monfils, which this time he won 6: 3, 7: 6 (10: 8). Thanks to these successes, Sinner was able to place itself in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time (93rd place).

In autumn 2019, Sinner received a wildcard for the third edition of the Next Generation ATP Finals in Milan. After victories in the first two group games against Tiafoe and Mikael Ymer , Sinner was already qualified for the semi-finals early, so that he could afford a defeat in the last group game against Ugo Humbert . After a semi-final win against Miomir Kecmanović , he became the youngest player to date to win the final, with a clear win against last year's finalist Alex De Minaur . A week later, at the end of the season, he entered his home tournament in Ortisei , where he won his third Challenger tournament without losing a set in the entire tournament with a win against Sebastian Ofner in the final. He ended the year he started at number 553 in the world rankings at number 78.

2020: Regular participation on the ATP tour

The year 2020 began with little success for Sinner with the two first-round defeats against Emil Ruusuvuori and Benoît Paire at the tournaments in Canberra and Auckland. Thanks to the successes in the previous year, he was so far ahead of the world rankings despite these two opening defeats that he was qualified for the first time directly for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. At the Australian Open, he celebrated his first victory in a Grand Slam tournament with a three-set win against Australian qualifier Max Purcell , but was defeated in three sets by Hungarian Márton Fucsovics in the second round . At the beginning of February he lost in the first round at the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier in two sets against Mikael Ymer , against whom he was able to prevail at the NextGen finals the year before. The subsequent ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam was more successful for him. After a walkover in the first round, he won 7: 6 (9: 7), 7: 5 against David Goffin in the round of 16 and celebrated his first success against a top 10 player. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Pablo Carreño Busta 5: 7, 6: 3, 6: 7 (6: 8). At the ATP 250 tournament a week later in Marseille, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against number 5 in the world, Daniil Medvedev . Although he won the first set in less than 25 minutes with 6: 1, but then lost the other two sets just as clearly with 1: 6, 2: 6.
