Steve Johnson was born in Orange, where he grew up. His father, Steve Sr., was a tennis coach, and his mother, Michelle, was a professor of mathematics. In May 2017, his father died suddenly at the age of 58. Johnson, who studies at the University of Southern California (USC), also has a sister, Alison.
Career
Johnson, who was active and successful at college level for the USC Trojans , has so far celebrated six tournament successes on the Challenger Tour , four of them in singles and two in doubles. He made his debut on the ATP World Tour in 2010 when he qualified for the peloton for the first time in Los Angeles . In the first round he was defeated by Somdev Devvarman . In Grand Slam tournaments , he was initially only in the main field at the US Open due to wild cards . In 2012 he had the first surprise in the singles when he made it through to the third round. He defeated it Rajeev Ram and Ernests Gulbis before it failed to Richard Gasquet . In doubles , he surprisingly survived the opening round with Jack Sock . With 1: 6, 7: 6 4 , 6: 2 the two defeated the leading doubles in the world rankings at the time, Daniel Nestor and Max Mirny . In the second round, Johnson and Sock lost to their opponents in straight sets. In the tennis world rankings he steadily rose and reached a final on the World Tour in the 2015 season for the first time. In Vienna he was defeated by David Ferrer in three sentences. At the US Open 2015 he reached the semifinals with Sam Querrey .
