Ramkumar Ramanathan (born November 8, 1994 in Chennai ) is an Indian tennis player .

Career

Ramkumar Ramanathan mainly plays on the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Future Tour . He has celebrated seven single and nine double victories on the Future Tour so far. He made his singles debut on the ATP World Tour in January 2014 at the Aircel Chennai Open , where he was able to qualify for the individual competition and defeat his compatriot Somdev Devvarman in the first round , before clearly beating in two sets in the second round Marcel Granollers lost. He played doubles for the first time in January 2012 at the side of Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash at the Aircel Chennai Open on the World Tour level, but lost there in the opening round against Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram .

In 2016 he played for the Indian Davis Cup team for the first time .

At the first edition of the Antalya Open , Ramanathan caused a surprise when the qualifier defeated the top seeded Dominic Thiem in two sets and made it into a quarter-finals on the World Tour level for the first time. After reaching the finals at the Challenger tournament in Winnetka , Ramanathan marked a new career high at world number 168.

In Newport , Ramanathan moved into his first final on the ATP World Tour. He beat the two top 100 players Vasek Pospisil and Denis Kudla , among others , before losing the final against the American Steve Johnson in three sets. Subsequently, he took 111th place, a new top position in the world rankings. His first success on the Challenger Tour came at the end of the year with his compatriot N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth . In the final in Pune , they defeated the pairing Hsieh Cheng-peng and Yang Tsung-hua in three tight sets .
