Jonathan Dario Erlich ( Hebrew
יונתן דאריו "יוני" ארליך ; Born April 5, 1977 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is an Israeli tennis player . In his career, he has so far won a total of 20 tournaments in doubles - including a Grand Slam tournament - most of them with his former partner Andy Ram .
biography
Erlich was born in 1977 in Buenos Aires , Argentina. When he was one year old, his family immigrated to Haifa , Israel . Today he lives in Tel Aviv . He started playing tennis at the age of three. He played his first tournament when he was seven. He later trained at the Wingate Institute for athletes in Israel, where he also met his future partner in doubles Andy Ram . In 1996, at the age of 19, he became a professional tennis player.
Career
Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram at the 2008 Gerry Weber Open.
1996-2005
Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram played together for the first time in June 2001 at the Queen's Club in London .
In 2003, Erlich and Ram won the quarterfinals at Wimbledon against Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor with three sets in the tie-breaker, but lost the subsequent semifinals against Jonas Björkman and Todd Woodbridge . At that time, they were the first Israeli doubles pair to ever stand in a Grand Slam semi-final. In September of the same year, the two won their first tournament in doubles, the Thailand Open . The duo's second tournament success followed just a month later when they won the Grand Prix de Lyon against the French Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut . In 2004 they won the tournament again, this time against Jonas Björkman and Radek Štěpánek 7: 6 and 6: 2. Also in 2004 they reached the quarter-finals at the Olympic Games in Athens.
At the end of 2005, they were number eight and nine in the ranking .
2006 until today
In the first week of the 2006 season, Erlich and Ram won the doubles competition at the Adelaide Tournament . In March they defended the double title of the tournament in Nottingham against the Russians Dmitri Tursunow and Igor Kunitsyn 6: 3 and 6: 2. In November 2006 they won against the top seeded Bob and Mike Bryan at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai 7: 6, 2: 6 and 6: 1, and again in August of the same year at the Cincinnati Masters with 4: 6, 6: 3, [13:11].
In 2008 they achieved their greatest success by winning the double competition at the Australian Open . Opponents in the final were the French Arnaud Clément and Michaël Llodra . It was noteworthy that the two did not deliver a single set during the course of the tournament. In March 2008 Erlich and Ram won the Pacific Life Open , where they played the final against Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić .
By 2014, Erlich and Ram had jointly won 15 titles on the World Tour and were in a final 13 more times. Ram ended his career in September 2014 following the Davis Cup game against Argentina, in which he last played alongside Jonathan Erlich. Since then, Erlich has been active with changing partners, with whom he has occasionally been able to win other tour titles.
