James "Jamie" Robert Murray , OBE (born February 13, 1986 in Dunblane ) is a British tennis player from Scotland . He is the older brother of professional tennis player Andy Murray . From April 4, 2016, he was world number one in doubles for nine weeks, with one interruption . So far, he has won seven Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed games.

Career

Until 2007: First years and top 50 in doubles

In 2006 Murray reached two double finals on the ATP Tour . At the end of July, he and his American doubles partner Eric Butorac made it to the finals of the tournament in Los Angeles , which they lost to the top-seeded brothers Bob and Mike Bryan . In September there was another final defeat in Bangkok , this time in a match tie-break at the side of his brother Andy Murray against Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich .

In February 2007, Murray and Butorac got their first tournament victory, still at Challenger level. This was followed by successes on the ATP Tour at the SAP Open in San José and the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis. With the tournament victories, Murray reached the top 50 of the double world rankings for the first time. On March 20, Murray was appointed to the British Davis Cup team for the first time . He defeated there together with Greg Rusedski , Robin Haase and Rogier Wassen in four sets. After winning the mixed title with Jelena Janković at the Wimbledon Championships , he also advanced to the semifinals at the US Open alongside Liezel Huber , but missed his second Grand Slam final within a year.

2008: Short collaboration with Maks Mirny and new career high

Murray started the year 2008 with a new doubles partner, the Belarusian Maks Mirny . Winning the Delray Beach tournament in February was followed by a series of defeats. They failed in eleven tournaments in the first two rounds, including the Australian Open . After only four wins, Murray and Mirny ended their double career together. The Briton had more success with other partners; he reached the semi-finals of the Movistar Open with Nicolás Lapentti and the final of the Estoril Open with Kevin Ullyett . Jamie Murray also showed increased interest in singles. With a match against Marcel Granollers in January he took part in an individual qualification and applied for a wildcard at Wimbledon . After losing in the qualification at the Artois Championships against Poland's Łukasz Kubot , Murray was refused entry at the traditional grass tournament in singles. Together with Jeff Coetzee he reached the final of the Slazenger Open , and with Max Mirny the semi-finals of the Artois Championships and the second round at Wimbledon . He was also in the mixed final of the US Open with Liezel Huber . At the Olympic Games in Beijing he reached the second round in doubles with his brother Andy. He finished the year at number 28 in the world.

2009–2012: Up and down in the top 100

In the 2009 and 2010 seasons Murray won four titles on the Challenger Tour. With Jamie Delgado he won in Trani and Ljubljana in 2009 and with Jonathan Marray in Alphen aan den Rijn and Astana . The following year, Jonathan Marray secured the titles in Salinas and Bergamo , before winning titles with Ross Hutchins in Tashkent and with Colin Fleming in Bratislava . On the World Tour he did not take part in the finals in 2009 , but won the tournament in Valencia with his brother Andy in 2010, with which he won his second title in a tournament in the World Tour 500 category. They defeated Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirny 10: 7 in the match tie-breaker in the final . In 2011 the Murray brothers managed to win a tournament together. In Tokyo they defeated František Čermák and Filip Polášek in two sets in the final in October . A month earlier, Murray had won his sixth World Tour title with André Sá in Metz . In the 2012 season Murray stayed for the first time since 2006 without a finals on the World Tour and without winning the title on the Challenger Tour. The Olympic Games in London were also unsuccessful: at the side of his brother Andy, he failed in doubles in the opening game to Jürgen Melzer and Alexander Peya .

2013–2014: With John Peers to an expanded world class

At the start of the 2013 season , Murray began a solid double partnership with John Peers . In their first season together they reached four finals, including three title wins. In Houston they defeated Bob and Mike Bryan in April , in July they prevailed against Pablo Andújar and Guillermo García López in Gstaad . In September they won the title in Bangkok , while a month later they were left behind in Tokyo against Rohan Bopanna and Édouard Roger-Vasselin . At the US Open they reached the quarter-finals, Murray's best performance to date in a Grand Slam tournament. Murray and Peers also won the Challenger tournament in Nottingham . In the 2014 season they only managed to win a title at the World Tour tournament in Munich . With 6: 4 and 6: 2 they won the final against Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins. In September they were again in the final in Kuala Lumpur , but lost against Marcin Matkowski and Leander Paes with 5:10 in the match tie-break. In Grand Slam tournaments, both at the French Open and at Wimbledon, they made it to the round of 16.

2015–2018: Davis Cup victory, Grand Slam victories with Bruno Soares and number 1 in the world

2015 Murray and Peers got off to a successful start to the season when they won the first tournament of the year in Brisbane . They prevailed in the final in two sets against Oleksandr Dolhopolow and Kei Nishikori . This was followed in the first half of the season by final defeats at the World Tour 500 tournaments in Rotterdam (against Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau ) and Barcelona (against Marin Draganja and Henri Kontinen ). In July they reached their first final at a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon . Their opponents Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecău were beaten in three sets. A month later they won their second joint title of the season and their sixth overall in Hamburg after a final victory against Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah . They won the game just 10: 8 in the match tie breaker. At the US Open that followed shortly thereafter , Murray and Peers also made it into the final, but were again left behind. This time they lost 4: 6 and 4: 6 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut . Subsequently, she also reached the finals in Vienna and Basel , also without ultimately being able to win the title. At the ATP World Tour Finals they were eliminated in the group stage after they had lost the decisive game for the semi-finals against Bob and Mike Bryan at 14:16 in the match tie-breaker. The season ended with a great success for Murray in the Davis Cup . With the British team, he won the competition thanks to a 3-1 final win over Belgium . In the final encounter, Murray and his brother Andy played the doubles game, which they won in four sets against Steve Darcis and David Goffin . At the end of the season, Murray and Peers dissolved their partnership and Murray, who reached a new career high of seventh in the world rankings at the end of the year, announced that he would play with Bruno Soares as a permanent double partner from 2016 .

The 2016 season started very successfully for Murray, this time with Soares. In their second joint competition, they achieved a first success with winning the tournament in Sydney , where they defeated Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea in two sets in the final. After five wins in a row, they also made it into the last round of the Australian Open and also won it against Daniel Nestor and Radek Štěpánek with 2: 6, 6: 4 and 7: 5. For both of them it was the first Grand Slam title in doubles. On April 4th, 2016 Murray took the top position in the double world rankings . He was the first Briton to become world number one in tennis. On November 7, 2016, his brother Andy Murray became the first Briton to do this in an individual. That same month, Murray stood in Monte Carlo for the first time in his career in a Masters final. He and Soares were defeated in this by Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. In June 2016, Murray was named Officer (OBE) of the Order of the British Empire for his services to tennis . While they were eliminated at the French Open in the round of 16 and at Wimbledon in the quarter-finals, they made it to the finals again at the Masters in Toronto in July , but were again left behind . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Murray started in two competitions. In doubles he was unsuccessful at the side of his brother Andy, the two were eliminated against Thomaz Bellucci and André Sá in the first round. Even in mixed , he couldn't get past the opening game with Johanna Konta . With Bruno Soares, Murray achieved another great success in the second half of the season at the US Open . After reaching the final, they defeated Pablo Carreño Busta and Guillermo García López 6: 2 and 6: 3 in the final . They qualified because of their successes for the World Tour Finals , in which they reached the semifinals. Murray finished the season in fourth place in the world rankings.

The track records for the 2017 and 2018 seasons are very similar. On the World Tour, Murray and Soares both reached six finals and won three of them. They also reached the quarter-finals in two Grand Slam tournaments. In 2017 they secured the title in Acapulco , Stuttgart and the Queen's Club , while they lost the final in Sydney , the Cincinnati Masters and Tokyo . At the French Open and the US Open , they made it to the quarter-finals. Murray was far more successful in mixed Grand Slam tournaments in 2017: with Martina Hingis he won the title at both Wimbledon and the US Open . At the ATP Finals Murray and Soares reached the semifinals again at the end of the 2017 season. The following season, the two won the tournaments in Acapulco and Washington, DC and the Masters in Cincinnati . In the course of the season they also reached the finals in Doha , the Queen's Club and the Shanghai Masters, as well as the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open . At the ATP Finals, they were eliminated in the semifinals for the third time in a row. At the side of Bethanie Mattek-Sands , Murray also succeeded in defending the mixed title at the US Open when they defeated Nikola Mektić and Alicja Rosolska 11: 9 in the match tie-breaker.

From 2019: New partner and slight relapse in the world rankings

The start of the 2019 season was again successful for Murray and Soares. In Sydney they secured the title after beating Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah in the final. They lost to Cabal and Farah three months later in their second final of the year in Barcelona 4: 6 and 6: 7. Murray had previously competed on the Challenger Tour with Neal Skupski in Phoenix and won the tournament with him. After the French Open , where they were eliminated in the first round, Murray and Soares ended their long-term partnership. Murray continued the season, with a few exceptions, with Neal Skupski as a new permanent doubles partner. The two reached five semifinals later in the season, including at the US Open , where they were subject to the top-seeded Cabal and Farah. On September 7, 2019, Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands won again the mixed title at the US Open against Michael Venus and Chan Hao-ching , making the two the first duo since 1982 to defend their title in Flushing Meadows .
