The Masters tournament in Cincinnati (officially Western & Southern Open ) is the seventh of nine tennis tournaments of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 every year and is played on hard courts in Mason, Ohio near Cincinnati in August . They are part of the US Open Series , a series of hard court tournaments in North America that are used in preparation for the US Open .

The tournament is one of the longest existing in the tennis world: it was first held in 1899 on a site that is now Xavier University . As early as 1909, the tournament was held at the Cincinnati Tennis Club , where it was held under different names until 1972. In the 1970s, the locations changed, in 1974 the tournament was even held indoors, between 1975 and 1978 on Coney Island in the Ohio River . In 1979 the location moved to the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio , a suburb of Cincinnati for the last time , where it is still held today. During this move, the surface also changed: until 1979 the tournament was mainly played on clay, since then the event has been a hard court tournament. In the 1970s, consideration was given to removing the tournament from the calendar of events, but today the Cincinnati Masters is one of the largest tennis tournaments in the world, and not least, the Cincinnati Masters has been an integral part of the Masters Series since its introduction.

Like the two spring Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , the Canada Masters and the Cincinnati Masters take place in two consecutive weeks. It is therefore considered a special achievement to win both tournaments in the same year. This has been successful since the Masters Series was introduced by Patrick Rafter in 1998, Andy Roddick in 2003 and Rafael Nadal in 2013; the brothers Bob and Mike Bryan were the only doubles team to achieve this in 2010; Jonas Björkman won the double competition in both tournaments in 1999, but with different partners. Andre Agassi won the title at both tournaments in 1995, but they did not take place one after the other.

The record winner of the tournament is Roger Federer . He won the tournament a total of seven times.
