Mark Edmondson (born June 24, 1954 in Gosford ) is a retired Australian tennis player .

Career

The highest position he reached as a tennis player on the world rankings was 15th in 1982. The greatest triumph in a tennis tournament was the victory in the men's singles at the 1976 Australian Open against John Newcombe . At that time Edmondson was only listed at 212th place in the world rankings, making him the Grand Slam winner with the worst world ranking at the time of his victory. He is also the last Australian to win the Australian Open.

In doubles he even won the Australian Open four times: 1980 and 1981 with Kim Warwick , 1983 with Paul McNamee and 1984 with Sherwood Stewart . In 1985 he was with Kim Warwick again in the final in Melbourne, but they lost. In the same year he won the French Open with Warwick , in 1983 he had failed in the final in Roland Garros on the side of Sherwood Stewart. In mixed he was twice in a grand slam final: 1980 in Wimbledon with Dianne Fromholtz and 1986 in Roland Garros with Rosalyn Fairbank .

On the ATP Tour he also won six titles in singles and 34 other tournament victories in doubles.

Between 1977 and 1985 Edmondson played 19 games for the Australian Davis Cup team . He won eleven of his 18 singles and eight of his eleven doubles. In 1977 and 1983 he won the Davis Cup with the team . In the 1977 season, however, he was only used in the first two games. In 1983, however, he also played the doubles game against Sweden in the final .
