Mark Anthony Philippoussis (born November 7, 1976 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian tennis player of Greek descent.

Career

He became a professional tennis player in 1994 and was the youngest player in the top 50 in 1995 at the age of 19. In 1998 he reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open , which he lost to his compatriot Patrick Rafter . In 1999 he was listed in the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time and won the Hopman Cup in January together with Jelena Dokić .

In 2003 he reached the final at Wimbledon , which he lost to Roger Federer . In the same year he won the Davis Cup with the Australian team against Spain . Between 1995 and 2006 he played 13 games for Australia and played 23 individual games. He won 13 of them.

Philippoussis also held the speed record for serves for a short time with 228 km / h before he was outbid by Greg Rusedski with 239 km / h. After Andy Roddick and then Ivo Karlović surpassed this, Samuel Groth currently holds the world record for the fastest serve of 263 km / h.

In the summer of 2007, Philippoussis took part in the "Age of Love" show on the American TV station NBC .

In 2009, Philippoussis announced that he was out of money and had to leave his house: “I haven't played tournaments since 2006 and tennis is one of those sports where you don't get paid if you don't play. "

Comeback attempt

In January 2010, Philippoussis made his comeback in professional tennis. He started at a Challenger tournament in Dallas, where he lost 4: 6, 4: 6 to Michael Yani in the first round . He told the US media that he wanted to work his way back to the ATP tour step by step, but there were no more games at the Challenger or ATP level.

He received a wild card for the tournament in Newport in early July 2015, but was eliminated in the first round of qualification. He also received a wildcard in doubles with partner Ryan Harrison .
