Àlex Corretja i Verdegay (born April 11, 1974 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish tennis player . He reached the final of the French Open twice , in 1998 he became tennis world champion. With Spain he won the Davis Cup in 2000 .

Career

Àlex Corretja turned pro in 1991 after winning the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl tournament in the 1990 season . In 1994 he won his first professional title in Buenos Aires . In 1996 he reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time ; In a memorable game of the US Open he lost to the American Pete Sampras after 4 hours and 9 minutes .

1997 was a good season for Corretja, during which he won the Masters tournament in Rome. At the French Open in 1998 he reached the final, but there was clearly defeated by his compatriot Carlos Moyá in three sets. With Moyá, Corretja should deliver a few more competitive games in the following years, including in the final of the World Cup in the same year when he was able to turn a 2-0 set deficit and win the title. He is one of five winners of the ATP World Championship who have not won a Grand Slam tournament in their careers. Corretja ended the year in third place in the world rankings .

In 2000 he mainly celebrated team successes. He led the Spanish Davis Cup team to their first title and won the bronze medal in Olympic doubles alongside Albert Costa . In 2001 he reached the final of the French Open again, but lost again, this time to the Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten . In 2003 Corretja reached the Davis Cup final with Spain again, but the team was inferior to the Australian selection in the end.

In the last few years Corretja has gradually moved away from the top of the world. In the 2005 season he only appeared in smaller tournaments. In 2006 he ended his career due to an eye injury.

In 2011 and 2012 he was the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team.

Corretja has been accompanying the Grand Slam tournaments as an interviewer for the pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport since 2015 .
