At the French Open in 1998 he reached the final, but there was clearly defeated by his compatriot Carlos Moyá in three sets. He is one of five winners of the ATP World Championship who have not won a Grand Slam tournament in their careers. Corretja ended the year in third place in the world rankings .
In 2000 he mainly celebrated team successes. He led the Spanish Davis Cup team to their first title and won the bronze medal in Olympic doubles alongside Albert Costa . In 2001 he reached the final of the French Open again, but lost again, this time to the Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten . In 2003 Corretja reached the Davis Cup final with Spain again, but the team was inferior to the Australian selection in the end.
In the last few years Corretja has gradually moved away from the top of the world. In the 2005 season he only appeared in smaller tournaments. In 2006 he ended his career due to an eye injury.
In 2011 and 2012 he was the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team.
