Mariano Puerta (born September 19, 1978 in San Francisco , Córdoba ) is a retired Argentinian tennis player .

Career

Puerta has been a professional player since 1995. In his career he won three ATP tournaments, all on clay: Palermo (1998), Bogotá (2000) and Casablanca (2005).

After it could be proven that he was taking Clenbuterol , Puerta was banned for nine months in 2003. The significant increase in weight during this time earned him the nickname "el gordo" (the fat one).

In June 2005 he reached his first Grand Slam final at the French Open . However, it subsequently became known that Puerta had also tested positive for etilefrine there. Mariano Puerta was banned for eight years on December 21, 2005, but appealed the verdict. On July 12, 2006, the ban was announced to be reduced to two years. On June 5, 2007 he made his comeback at the Challenger tournament in Sassuolo , for which he got a wildcard. In 2009 he ended his career.
