The ATP tournament in Munich (officially BMW Open by FWU AG ) is a tennis tournament that is played outdoors on clay. Since it achieved international status in 1949, it has taken place annually in Munich with the exception of 1952 and 1972 . The tournament is currently part of the ATP World Tour 250 and takes place annually in April or May. In the same week there is currently a tournament in Estoril .

As early as 1900, the Munich tennis and tournament club (MTTC) Iphitos organized the first international tennis championships in Bavaria . At that time, grass was still played, as the club founded by students in 1892 only had one lawn court. The MTTC was the first tennis club in Munich . The name " Iphitos " was chosen in memory of the Greek king who lived in 776 BC. BC initiated the Olympic Games of antiquity . The center court of the MTTC, which has a capacity of 5,600 spectators, has been located at Aumeisterweg 10 since 1930. The facility has three additional courts on which people play; there are also five training courts and five further courts.

In 2002 Rudi Berger took over the tournament direction from Nikola Pilić . The BMW Open 2007, however, was his last tournament, he died in August 2007 of a brain tumor. Tournament director since 2008 is Patrik Kühnen .

The record winner of the tournament in individual is Philipp Kohlschreiber with three titles. Even before the Open Era , the American Budge Patty and the German Gottfried von Cramm each won three titles. In doubles, only Wojciech Fibak had three tournament victories up to 1984. In addition to the 80,000 euros in prize money, the winner of the tournament will receive a car worth around 45,000 euros from the title sponsor BMW .
