Xavier Malisse (born July 19, 1980 in Kortrijk ) is a former Belgian tennis player .

Career

His most successful season was the 2002 season , when he became the first Belgian to make it into the top 25 of the world rankings and also became the first Belgian since Paul de Borman to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1904. On the way there he defeated Evgeni Kafelnikow , Greg Rusedski and Richard Krajicek, among others . In the semifinals he had to admit defeat to the Argentine David Nalbandian after five sets .

In 2004 Malisse won the ATP tournament in Delray Beach . He was also in the finals of seven other tournaments. In the same year he also won the double competition at the French Open together with his compatriot Olivier Rochus .

In 2007 he won the Chennai tournament , defeated Stefan Koubek in the final and eliminated the high favorite Rafael Nadal in the course of the tournament . Shortly afterwards, like in 2004, Malisse won the Delray Beach final by defeating number 1 seeded James Blake . At the end of 2009, Malisse and his compatriot Yanina Wickmayer were banned from the Belgian Tennis Association for one year because they had failed to appear for doping tests several times . The ban was lifted by the international association and Malisse was able to play on the tour again in 2010. He achieved his best results in the short grass season (quarter-finals Queens, semi-finals S'Hertogenbosch and third round Wimbledon) and was able to improve significantly in the ranking after a long dry spell.

In January 2011, Malisse reached an ATP final in Chennai for the first time in almost four years, but he was defeated in three sets by Stanislas Wawrinka . At the Australian Open he reached the third round, in which he failed in three sets to Roger Federer . After some first round defeats, Malisse won the third round again in Indian Wells and failed there against the Indian Somdev Devvarman . However, he was able to win the double competition of the Masters tournament on the side of Oleksandr Dolhopolow , with whom he played for the first time ; in the final they defeated the Swiss duo Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka . It was Malisse's first title (both singles and doubles) in four years.

Between 1998 and 2011 he played 15 games for the Belgian Davis Cup team . He won 12 of his 20 singles games, while he had no win in all four matches in doubles.

During the US Open 2013 , Xavier Malisse announced his resignation after the Australian Open 2014 . After his first round at the Challenger tournament in Mons in October 2013, however, he announced his immediate retirement.

In the 2016 season, Malisse, who now works for a supplier, made a comeback as a player at TC Waldhof from Bottrop , who plays in the Regionalliga West.
