Gregory "Greg" Rusedski (born September 6, 1973 in Montreal , Canada ) is a former British tennis player who initially played for Canada.
Personal
Greg Rusedski has a British mother and a Canadian father. In 1995 he decided to take British citizenship. He has been married to Lucy Connor since 1999, with whom he has been in a relationship since 1991. The couple has a daughter (* 2006) and a son (* 2009).
Career
He achieved his best results in 1997 when he reached the final of the US Open , which he lost to Patrick Rafter (3: 6, 2: 6, 6: 4, 5: 7), and in 1999 when he won the Grand Slam Cup in Munich .
He has won 15 individual titles in his career. 1997 was number 4 in the ATP world rankings - it was his best position. In the same year he was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in Great Britain .
Although Rusedski was one of the best British tennis players of his time alongside Tim Henman and Andy Murray , he lacked recognition in the British public. This is particularly underpinned by events that occurred at the home tournament at Wimbledon . In 2000 journalists asked him about his preferred opponent before the draw. Curiously, the draw with Vincent Spadea resulted in the player he named. Spadea won the first round match 6: 3, 6: 7, 5 , 6: 3, 6: 7, 8 and 9: 7, which caused a stir at the time. In 2003, in his second round match against Andy Roddick, he berated the referee for refusing to repeat a point after a fan interference. He lost the game 6: 7 10 , 6: 7 11 , 5: 7, which brought him criticism again in the press.
Rusedski was plagued by injuries in the last few seasons of his career. In January 2004, he tested positive for nandrolone . After a hearing on March 10, 2004, he was acquitted of doping allegations because the positive test was caused by contaminated food. On April 7, 2007, Rusedski officially announced his retirement from competitive sports.
Records
For a long time, Rusedski was the record holder for the hardest serve in men's tennis; He was able to relegate many serve-and-volley players such as Pete Sampras , Richard Krajicek , Goran Ivanišević or Marc Rosset to the places in this ranking. On March 14, 1998 at the ATP tournament in Indian Wells , he hit with 239.8 km / h. This record was broken by the Swede Joachim Johansson and almost simultaneously by Andy Roddick on February 6, 2004.
For a long time, Rusedski also held the record for the fastest victory on the ATP Tour ; in the second round of the Sydney International tennis tournament in 1996 he defeated the German Carsten Arriens in just 29 minutes. This record was only broken in 2014.
Others
Rusedski's final appearance at the 1997 US Open fell in the week between the death and funeral of Princess Diana . Rusedski played his last games with a black bow as a sign of sadness.
In 2008 he took part in the third season of the figure skating show Dancing on Ice .
