Marques was in 1986 in the round of 16 of the junior tournament of the French Open and in the quarterfinals of the junior tournaments of Wimbledon and the US Open . The following year he was at the French Open in both singles and doubles in the quarterfinals of the junior competition. As a professional tennis player, he celebrated his successes mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour , where he was able to win five singles and 19 doubles over the course of his career. After losing in the double finals in Newport in 1995 and Bournemouth in 1996 , he won his first and only double title on the ATP World Tour against the two local heroes Karim Alami and Hicham Arazi in 1997 at the side of his compatriot João Cunha e Silva in Casablanca . He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1995 with position 86 in singles and 1997 with position 58 in doubles.
His best individual results in Grand Slam tournaments were reaching the second round of the Australian Open , the French Open and the US Open. In the doubles competition he reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2000 on the side of Tom Vanhoudt .
Marques played 39 singles and 19 doubles games for the Portuguese Davis Cup team between 1986 and 2002 . His greatest success with the team was participation in the first round of the world group in 1994. In the defeat against Croatia he lost his two singles games against Igor Sarić and Goran Ivanišević as well as the doubles. At the 2000 Summer Olympics , he competed in doubles for Portugal. At the side of Bernardo Mota , however, he was eliminated in the first round against the Bahamas doubles .
