Goran Simun Ivanišević [ ˈɡɔran iʋaˈniːʃɛʋitɕ ] (born September 13, 1971 in Split , Yugoslavia ) is a former Yugoslav and Croatian tennis player and tennis coach . His greatest achievement was winning the 2001 Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon.
Life
Goran is the son of Srđan and Gorana Ivanišević (nee Škaričić). Ivanišević won the double finals of the junior competition at the US Open alongside Diego Nargiso in 1987 and became a professional tennis player the following year. In 1990 he reached the Wimbledon semi-finals at the age of 18 . Two years later he was in the final, where he failed in 5 sets against Andre Agassi . After two further defeats in the final against Pete Sampras (1994 and 1998), he finally achieved his first and only Grand Slam victory in 2001 . Since his ranking position did not allow him to compete in the main field, he received a wildcard from the organizer. In the semi-finals there was a duel against the favored local madator Tim Henman , which he won in five sets after various rain interruptions. In the final, he defeated Australian Patrick Rafter 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 3, 2: 6, 9: 7. Along with Iva Majoli and Marin Čilić, he is the only Croatian Grand Slam winner in singles. He was also twice in the double final of the French Open ; In 1990 he was defeated at the side of Petr Korda against the Spaniards Sergio Casal and Emilio Sánchez Vicario , in 1999 he was defeated at the side of Jeff Tarango to the Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes .
At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he won the first medal (bronze) for the independent Croatia . In total, Ivanišević won 22 ATP tournaments on all surfaces and holds the record for beating aces within a calendar year (1477), which earned him the nickname "Lord of Aces". In addition, he held the speed record for serves of 218 km / h for a short time, which exceeded Marc Rosset's long-term record of 215 km / h .
His last appearance at Wimbledon was the defeat in the third round against Lleyton Hewitt in June 2004. After that, he announced his retirement as a professional tennis player and sat only once at the Davis Cup final in 2005 as a substitute on the bench. Between 1988 and 1991 he played for the Yugoslav Davis Cup team, in his 19 games he was 15 times victorious, including ten consecutive wins. From 1993 to 2003 he played for Croatia, in 2002 he was the match winner against Germany with his two individual victories against Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schüttler as well as the double victory alongside Ivan Ljubičić . He also won the World Team Cup with Yugoslavia in 1990 and the Hopman Cup with Croatia in 1996.
Due to financial difficulties as a result of bad investments, Ivanišević has been playing tournaments as part of the ATP Champions Tour since 2005 and was able to win some of these tournaments.
As a coach, Ivanišević led his compatriot Marin Čilić to success in the US Open in 2014 . He was his coach from September 2013 to July 2016. He is currently the coach of Novak Đoković .
