Mahesh Shrinivas Bhupathi ( Tamil : மகேஷ் பூபதி, born June 7, 1974 in Chennai ) is a former Indian tennis player who mainly specialized in doubles.

Career

2007 at the Australian Open

Mahesh Bhupathi belonged to the world class in tennis doubles from 1997. He won 52 tournaments on the ATP Tour and four Grand Slam titles in doubles and seven in mixed .

Bhupathi was particularly successful as a partner of Leander Paes , at whose side he won 26 titles. The so-called "Indian Express" has a particularly impressive record in the Davis Cup : between 1996 and 2011, Bhupathi and Paes did not lose a double there; they remained unbeaten in the last 25 Davis Cup games. From the late 1990s, Bhupathi limited himself to doubles. His career highlight in singles was also in the Davis Cup in February 1996, when he secured his team a 3-2 win against the Netherlands with successes against Jan Siemerink and Jacco Eltingh in Jaipur .

Bhupathi has had several doubles partners throughout his career. He also won several titles together with Max Mirny and Mark Knowles . But he has the best record with Leander Paes, at whose side he played regularly from the beginning of his career until 2002 and won 22 tournaments. In 2004 and in the 2011 season, the two played a few more tournaments together and won another four titles.

In mixed he won seven Grand Slam titles with seven different partners.

In 2001 Mahesh Bhupathi was awarded the Padma Shri , the fourth highest Indian civil order.
