Grant Stafford (born May 27, 1971 in Johannesburg ) is a former South African tennis player .

Life

Stafford reached the quarter-finals of the junior tournament of the French Open in 1989 on the side of Wayne Ferreira ; both won the title at the US Open Junior Championships that same year . The following year he became a professional tennis player. In 1992 he won his first double title on the ATP Challenger Tour . In total, he won eleven Challenger double titles and three Challenger singles titles in the course of his career. In 1993 he was in an individual final on the ATP World Tour in Durban for the first time , but in his three finals he was never able to celebrate a title win. He was more successful in the doubles competition, where he won five ATP doubles titles in the course of his career. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1994 with position 53 in singles and in 1998 with position 42 in doubles.

His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open in 1994. There he won against Mark Philippoussis , Emilio Sánchez and Marc Rosset before he was defeated by Goran Ivanišević . At Wimbledon in 1992 he reached the third round after victories over Thomas Muster and Patrick McEnroe , and then lost to Stefan Edberg . In the doubles competition he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the US Open. His best result in mixed was the semi-finals at the French Open 1999. On the side of Esme De Villiers he was defeated by the later title winners Piet Norval and Katarina Srebotnik .

Stafford played seven singles and one doubles game between 1994 and 1999 for the South African Davis Cup team . He won his only doubles game on the side of Ellis Ferreira against Andrei Olchowski and Andrei Tscherkassow , but in the singles he could not win a single victory. He lost to Tim Henman , Greg Rusedski , Tommy Haas and Thomas Enqvist, among others .
