Michael Tebbutt (born December 22, 1970 in Sydney ) is a former Australian tennis player .

Life

Tebbut joined the 1988 Australian Open junior tournament , but was eliminated in the first round in both singles and doubles. He studied finance at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff , reached the third round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association championships in 1992, and was elected to the top All-American selection that same year .

The following year he became a professional tennis player and had his first success at the start of the year when he was able to defeat Sergi Bruguera in the first round as a qualifier at the ATP tournament in Sydney . In July 1993 he reached the semi-finals at the Challenger Tournament in Montebello, among other things by defeating Greg Rusedski . Towards the end of the year he stood at the side of Sandon Stolle in Launceston for the first time in the double-finals of a Challenger tournament. In 1994, after his final victory over Tim Henman in Manila, he won his first and only Challenger single title, as well as his first Challenger double title in Bochum . In the course of his career he won a total of four double titles on the ATP Challenger Tour.

1996 was his most successful year on the ATP World Tour. He was with changing partners in the finals of the tournaments in Newport and Shanghai and the Masters of Indian Wells , but could not win any of the tournaments. He also achieved the best individual result of his career by taking part in the round of 16 at the Masters tournament in Key Biscane . He beat Patrick McEnroe , Paul Haarhuis and Hendrik Dreekmann there and finally lost to Jim Courier in three sets. In 1997 he won his first ATP double title in Indianapolis , his second and last title followed in 1998 in Scottsdale . He achieved his best scores in the world rankings in 1995 with position 87 in singles and in 1996 with position 28 in doubles.

His best performance in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the round of 16 at the 1995 US Open . After victories over Anders Järryd , David Wheaton and Richard Krajicek, he finally lost to Michael Chang . In the doubles competition he reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1996 , he was also in the second round of the US Open in 1995 and twice in the second round of the Australian Open. There he was also in the quarter-finals of the mixed competition in 1996.
