geography

Flagstaff is located at an altitude of around 2100 m on the southwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau in a landscape shaped by volcanism. North of the city rise the San Francisco Peaks with the Humphreys Peak , which marks the highest point in Arizona with 3852 m.

history

Legend has it that Flagstaff got its name when settlers heading west stopped here to celebrate United States Independence Day. Since the settlers needed a mast to hoist the American flag, they decapitated a tree and attached the flag to it. After moving on, other settlers came later to settle the area.

traffic

The old Route 66 , which is now being replaced by Interstate 40 and only a few sections of the original route, runs through Flagstaff . On the Interstate 17 there are good connections to California and Phoenix ( Arizona ).

Flagstaff has an Amtrak station where the Southwest Chief transcontinental long-distance train stops, providing direct daily connections to Los Angeles and Albuquerque - Kansas City - Chicago . The railway line is also very important in long-distance freight transport.

Flagstaff is connected to Phoenix by long-distance buses and a small airport. Since summer 2008 there has also been a flight connection to Los Angeles.

science

The city is home to Northern Arizona University , the only university in Northern Arizona. The city also became famous through the discovery of Pluto, long classified as a planet , by Clyde Tombaugh , which is still remembered today in the NAU's Lowell Observatory . One of the largest wooden domes on earth is also located here .

In addition to the Lowell Observatory, there are other important astronomical research facilities in Flagstaff. As early as 1958, to protect the observation conditions, the city issued a ban on outdoor advertising directed towards the sky and spotlights whose light pollution could hinder research. Flagstaff was a founding member of the International Dark Sky Association  (IDA). As of October 24, 2001, it was declared an International Dark Sky Community , the world's first light protection community , and the first light protection area recognized by the IDA.

tourism

The city's proximity to Grand Canyon National Park (120 km to the north) has made Flagstaff a popular tourist destination. Route 66, originally running between Chicago and Los Angeles, made the area more accessible and increased the tourist industry. Today Route 66 remains a historic route and popular tourist attraction, connecting the cities of Barstow , California and Albuquerque , New Mexico .

Other nearby tourist attractions include Walnut Canyon , Sunset Crater , Wupatki National Monument, and Barringer Crater (meteorite crater). In winter, the Arizona Snowbowl winter sports area is a popular destination, including among the people of Phoenix . The city of Sedona is just an hour's drive along Arizona State Route 89A, which runs through Oak Creek Canyon.

Glen Canyon Conservation Area and Lake Powell are both north on US Route 89, 216 km away.
