Winona is a small town in the US state of Arizona . It is located on the former Route 66 , about 19 kilometers east of Flagstaff .
history
The small place became world famous through the song Get Your Kicks on Route 66 , which was composed in January 1946 by Bobby Troup . The actually insignificant Winona was included in the song because Troup needed a rhyme for "Arizona".
This is how the famous line “Don't forget Winona!” (Don't forget Winona) came about. Over the years, the song was repeatedly re-recorded by numerous performers and actually ensured that Winona was not forgotten. In 2006 John Mayer recorded it as the soundtrack for the film Cars .
Winona previously belonged to Walnut Creek until the 1950s when it became part of Flagstaff . The Walnut Creek ("Walnut Creek") runs through Winona. It's been just a dry riverbed since a dam was built in Walnut Canyon to provide Flagstaff with a water reservoir.
