Williams is a city in Coconino County , Arizona, United States . The city has 2842 inhabitants on an area of 113.4 km². It is affected by the historic Route 66 and Interstate 40 . Arizona State Route 64 , which leads towards Grand Canyon Village on the south side of the Grand Canyon , also begins near Williams . Williams owns many restaurants and motels. With the Williams Municipal Airport , Williams has its own airport. The Dogtown Reservoir is also in town.
Williams train station in the center of the village is the starting point for the year-round Grand Canyon Railway to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, which is popular with tourists . Additional trains hauled by steam locomotives are also used in summer.
Until 31 December 2017 from the continued Amtrak -Bahnhof Williams Junction from the transcontinental long-distance train Southwest Chief daily toward Los Angeles and Flagstaff - Albuquerque - Kansas City - Chicago . Since January 1, 2018, passengers have to get on / off in neighboring Flagstaff and take a shuttle bus to / from Williams . The trigger for the change was the setting of a shuttle bus operated by the Grand Canyon Railway between the Amtrak station Williams Junction and the Williams station in the center of town. The Williams Junction station in its present form was / is not open to the public and has no infrastructure whatsoever. The Southwest Chief passes Williams in the late evening or early morning (as of January 2019).
