Tuba City ( Navajo : Tó Naneesdizí ) is a city in Coconino County in the US state of Arizona . It has 8611 inhabitants (status: 2010 census) on an area of 23.1 km². The population density is 372.8 / km². Most of the residents are Navajo , besides a Hopi minority. Tuba City is the largest parish in the Navajo Nation, which is also home to the headquarters of the Western Navajo Agency . The name comes from Toova , a chief of the Hopi from Oraibi , and means winding watercourses .
Geography and climate
Tuba City is located in the middle of the Painted Desert and is approximately 80 km from the east entrance to Grand Canyon National Park . The location is on US Highway 160 , near the intersection with Arizona State Route 264 .
The Mogollon Rim in the southwest prevents the Painted Desert from getting enough moisture from the Gulf of Mexico . The climate has a wide range with hot summers and cold winters. Frost is normal from October to April and the majority of winters do not bring significant snowfall. The humidity is very low and is only about 5 percent.

history
Records of the city's history go back more than 200 years. In 1776, Father Francisco Garcés visited the area and reported on the cultivation of crops by the Indians. Chief Tuuvi , after whom the city is named, converted to Mormonism around 1870 and encouraged Mormons to settle near Moenkopi . Tuba City was founded by the Mormons in 1872. The place was known to the Hopi, Navajo and Paiute as a water-rich area with many springs in an otherwise arid desert landscape. In 1907, the United States government added the Tuba City region to the Navajo Reservation . In 1956, uranium was discovered near Tuba City and the city developed into a boomtown . In 1966 the uranium mill was closed again and the facilities and spoil heaps were decontaminated and recultivated by 1990.
Tourism
Tourist Destinations: 25 km southeast of Tuba City is the Cole Mine Canyon on AZ Highway 264. About 10 km west on Arizona Route 160 there is a field of dinosaur footprints and fossilized eggs . A guided hike is recommended. In the village itself is the Explore Interactive Museum , which is run by Navajo and shows a lot of interesting facts about their life, history and traditions. Also nearby is the Tuba City Trading Post, built in 1870 .
