John Clayton Mayer (born October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport , Connecticut ) is an American singer / songwriter and guitarist who has already been awarded a Grammy seven times . His songs combine the styles of R&B , rock , pop , blues and country music .

Life

John Mayer was born in 1977 to Margaret (an English teacher) and Richard Mayer (a high school director). He grew up the second of three sons near Fairfield and attended high school there.

Mayer played the clarinet for a while, but with little success. When he saw Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox ) insert the guitar in Back to the Future , he became interested in the instrument. When he was 13, his father is said to have borrowed a guitar for him and a neighbor gave him a Stevie Ray Vaughan cassette , which sparked his interest in the blues . After two years of practicing, he performed in blues bars and other venues. He became a member of a band called Villanova Junction.

When Mayer was 17 years old, he received treatment for cardiac arrhythmias. He later described this time as the beginning of his work as a songwriter. After his discharge from the hospital, he wrote the first passages of text. After graduating from high school, he worked at a gas station for 15 months to get his first real guitar, a 1996 Stevie Ray Vaughan Signature Fender Stratocaster .

Musical career

Mayer attended Berklee College of Music in Boston from the winter semester of 1997 , which he left in the second semester. In Berklee he had initially wanted to develop as a guitarist, but he increasingly concentrated on songwriting . In an interview he later said that he had given up the goal of “becoming the best guitarist ever” at the beginning of the second semester because it was unattainable. Rather, he recognized that it was important to be "audible".

Instead of continuing to study, he went to Atlanta with his college friend Clay Cook in the summer of 1998 to pursue a career as a musician. Together they wrote songs and played in different clubs. After a while they ended their collaboration due to musical differences, Mayer stayed in Atlanta and now appeared as a solo artist. During this time he increasingly played the acoustic guitar, as it gave him the opportunity to perform without a band.

With the help of Glenn Matuloo he recorded his first EP Inside Wants Out . Most of the eight songs come from the collaboration with Clay Cook, including the first successful single No Such Thing . For the first song Back to You an entire band was hired, including the co-producer of the EP, David Labruyere, on bass. Mayer and Labruyere then went on tour.

First successes

In March 2000, after an appearance at the South by Southwest Conference Aware Records, a young Columbia label , he became aware of him. After several festival appearances, Aware released his debut album Room for Squares in the spring of 2001 , but initially only on the Internet. After an agreement with Columbia, this released the album Room for Squares in September of the same year , which was artistically revised and the song 3x5 was added. The album spawned numerous radio hits in the United States, including No Such Thing , Your Body Is a Wonderland and Why Georgia . In 2003, John Mayer won a Grammy for Your Body Is a Wonderland in the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category .

In 2003 he released his first live CD / DVD Any Given Thursday and in the same year his second studio album Heavier Things was released . Although the album was not as commercially successful as Room for Squares, it landed at number one on the US Billboard charts, along with the single Daughters . The song even won a Grammy for Song of the Year . Mayer also received a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal . In 2006 he was honored with the David Starlight Award in the Songwriters Hall of Fame .

In 2004 he recorded live concerts on his US tour, which were released on iTunes under the title AS / IS . Mayer advertised Apple, Volkswagen and Blackberry.

Change in style of music

Mayer began to work with various artists outside of his genre. He worked on the song Go! von Common (Kanye West, MK12, Convert, Jason Webb, Rosali), and he was also involved in Kanye West's Bittersweet Poetry . Mayer earned great praise from established greats of hip-hop such as B. Jay-Z or Nelly . When asked why he appeared in the hip-hop scene, Mayer replied, "It's not music out there right now. That's why, to me, hip-hop is where rock used to be".

During this time, Mayer changed his style and moved more and more away from acoustic pop. In 2005 he began to work with blues greats such as BB King , Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton or with the jazz greats John Scofield and Herbie Hancock . Mayer let more and more blues and jazz flow into his music. In his playing style he was influenced by Jimi Hendrix , Stevie Ray Vaughan , Robert Cray and Freddie King . Since his album Born and Raised , which was released in 2012, his songs have increasingly been inspired by country music . So his style moved a little away from the original blues, jazz and pop genre.

John Mayer Trio and Try!

Steve Jordan (left), John Mayer and Pino Palladino

On January 15, 2005, Mayer performed with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan as part of a benefit concert for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake . After this performance he suggested continuing to work together as a trio, whereupon the three musicians went on tour as the John Mayer Trio that same year.

The live album Try! John Mayer Trio Live in Concert , which was released on November 22, 2005. In addition to tracks specially written for the trio, it also includes a reinterpretation of Daughters and two covers by famous blues musicians, Wait Until Tomorrow ( Jimi Hendrix Experience ) and I Got a Woman ( Ray Charles ) . 2006 was Try! Nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock Album category.

The Continuum era

Cleveland in 2008

The founding of the John Mayer Trio went hand in hand with the start of recording Mayer's third studio album, for which he had previously hired Steve Jordan as a co-producer. Continuum was released on September 12, 2006 in the USA and on January 19, 2007 in Germany.

As singles were Waiting on the World to Change , Gravity and Dreaming with a Broken Heart decoupled who placed well in the US charts. Continuum debuted at # 2 on the Billboard Top 200 and has been awarded two platinum awards.

In the opinion of the critics, the album marks an important step in Mayer's development as a musician, Mayer himself speaks of the fact that he made a leap forward through Continuum . Overall, the album was well received and was nominated for a Grammy in 2007 as Album Of The Year . It finally won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album , and Mayer was also awarded the Grammy for the best pop song by a male artist (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance) for “Waiting on the World to Change” . Mayer was nominated also in the category Best solo rock vocal performance for "Route 66" from the soundtrack to Cars .

Just three months after Continuum , Mayer released the EP The Village Sessions , which he recorded with Robbie McIntosh . Includes acoustic versions of songs that were previously on Continuum or Try! as well as a recording of Waiting on the World to Change with Ben Harper as a guest musician. The version of Belief included on the EP was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Awards in the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category on December 6, 2007 .

On July 1, 2008, Where the Light Is Mayer's fourth live album was released, which was recorded on December 8, 2007 at an extraordinary concert at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles . In addition to a solo appearance, a performance by the John Mayer Trio as well as an almost one-hour appearance with the entire band are included. The album was also released as a concert film, for which some backstage recordings were made. Where the Light Is was nominated at the Grammy Awards 2009 in the Long Term Video category, and Mayer was awarded in the Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance category for the live recording of Gravity during this concert .

In addition, Mayer won the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category with the song Say , which he wrote for the film The best comes to the end . The title was also nominated for best film song, and Mayer was also nominated for the award for his collaboration with Alicia Keys on the title Lesson Learned .

On July 7, 2009, Mayer appeared as one of many artists at the funeral service for Michael Jackson and played an instrumental version of his song Human Nature .

After a break of more than a year, he released his fourth studio album, Battle Studies , on November 17th, 2009 , which he again produced in collaboration with Steve Jordan. The album was a commercial success, but received mixed reviews from critics.

Health problems

In 2011 Mayer fell ill with a granuloma on the vocal cords that had to be surgically removed. The recovery dragged on for several months, which Mayer used to travel across the United States. In spring 2012, John Mayer announced that he would release his new album Born and Raised on May 22, 2012. Except for a few vocal parts, the album was already finished before his illness.

However, a planned tour had to be canceled because the disease reappeared and again required a break of several months. The album was released anyway and received consistently positive reviews. Mayer feared permanent damage to his voice and therefore concentrated on playing the guitar.

It was not until January 2013 that Mayer had recovered to the point where he could perform again, for example at the Crossroads Guitar Festival and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April .

Paradise Valley and Dead & Company

John Mayer at the Barclays Center , Brooklyn, New York on December 17, 2013

John Mayer announced his sixth studio album Paradise Valley , named after his place of residence, Paradise Valley , in June 2013. It was produced by Don Was , Frank Ocean and Katy Perry each played a song. The album was positively received by critics and audiences. After a three-year break, Mayer went on tour again that same year. The following year, Mayer recorded the piece Come Rain or Come Shine with Barbra Streisand for their new album Partners .

In 2011 John Mayer came into contact with the songs of the Grateful Dead . In February 2015, he invited Bob Weir , the guitarist of the Grateful Dead, to work with him in the studio. From this a closer cooperation developed in the following period, which led to the formation of the Grateful Dead successor band Dead & Company . Band members are Weir and Mayer, the former Grateful Dead members Bill Kreutzmann (drums) and Mickey Hart (drums) as well as Jeff Chimenti (keyboards) and Oteil Burbridge (bass). It was a new experience for Mayer, playing as an equal member of a group rather than the front man. The group then went on tour in the United States.

The Search for Everything

Due to his work with Dead & Company, work on John Mayer's next album was delayed. In September 2015 he announced via Twitter that he would produce a new album in 2016 with the same line-up as the Continuum album. He confirmed this in January with an Instagram photo on which Mayer, Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino can be seen. At the beginning of 2017, two extended plays with four songs each were released. The album The Search for Everything was released on April 14, 2017.

In April 2017, Mayer began a tour of the United States and Europe. He performed at the concerts both as a solo artist and with his trio and band.

other projects

Charity projects

Mayer is committed to environmental protection and has appeared at various charity events. In 2007 he founded Another Kind of Green , an organization dedicated to the problems of global warming.

In 2002, Mayer founded the Back to You Foundation, which uses a fund to promote health care, education, the arts and the promotion of talent. It receives its funds both through donations and through auctions organized by Mayer. After the rampage at Virginia Tech , he performed with many other stars at a free concert.

As a sign of support for Tibet and the Dalai Lama , Mayer recorded the album Songs for Tibet with Sting , Suzanne Vega , Alanis Morissette and other musicians .

Guitar design

In 2003 Mayer received a signature from the traditional company CF Martin & Co. , which was built according to his wishes and design ideas. The model is named OM-28 John Mayer . In 2005 Mayer signed a signature contract with Fender . Here he had two Signature Stratocasters built and a third Stratocaster with a characteristic “Racing Stripe” on the guitar's body. In January 2006 Martin released the second signature, the OMJM , which is similar to the first, but a little cheaper in price. In 2007 Fender expanded the range of John Mayer Signature guitars. In February 2009 it was announced that Fender and Mayer were working on a new version of Mayer's most famous guitar, the Black Relic . The guitar is to be called The Black One and will appear in two versions, an extremely limited edition of 83 pieces and a cheaper version that is unlimited for one year.

John Mayer, who is considered a passionate guitar lover and collector, now owns around 200 guitars. The amplifiers he uses were also manufactured by Two Rock Amps according to his wishes and preferences.

Fashion

In August 2006 Mayer founded his own fashion label JMltd . So he expanded his merchandising to double his old range. New items of clothing are designed and released every month, shoes and accessories are also a permanent feature in the range.

trip

Mayer, who likes to play live, often incorporates new elements into his performance. In addition to his band, musicians such as Maroon 5 , Sheryl Crow , Brett Dennen and Colbie Caillat played in his line-up or as a guest appearance. On its summer tour through the USA in 2013, OneRepublic was the opening act.

Mayer allows concert recordings and their publication as long as this is done without a commercial background. Many concert recordings can be downloaded from his site. Mayer maintains close contact with the audience in an amusing way.

Private life

In 2002 Mayer was in a relationship with Jennifer Love Hewitt , in 2007 with Jessica Simpson . He was dating Jennifer Aniston until March 2009 . From late 2012 to early 2014 he was in a relationship with the singer Katy Perry .

Mayer owns an apartment in New York's SoHo district and a mansion and recording studio in Hidden Hills , near Los Angeles . He also owns a house in Bozeman , Montana .
