The song was written for the musical St. Louis Woman , which the two authors co-wrote. Features of the song

The song "is one of the most touching declarations of love in American song literature: The vow of eternal love here expressly refers to sunshine and rainy days, happiness and misfortune, wealth and poverty." The 32- bar melody is laid out in the ABAC song form and alternates between major and minor . "The minor rules; in the melody , which over long distances in a kind Parlando - rhythm . seems to tread water, dominate jumps down "respect, recalls a setting more like the rainy days," Not only in good, but especially in bad times .. . "

Reception history

Various versions of the song were recorded as early as 1946, by Sy Oliver with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra , by Dinah Shore , by Frank Sinatra and by Helen Forrest with Dick Haymes . Even if the song wasn't that successful in the charts at the time, it became a standard in the 1950s. The versions by Dinah Washington (1954) and by Ray Charles (1959), who created the "shadow aspect" in a poignant manner despite an almost kitschy arrangement despite the use of trombones by Bob Brookmeyer, are considered exemplary . Other versions worth listening to are by Sarah Vaughan , accompanied by Miles Davis (1950), but also by Billie Holiday (1955) and by Ella Fitzgerald (quite optimistic 1977).

Bill Evans' trio recorded an instrumental version of the song for the LP Portrait in Jazz in 1959 . In the same year it was recorded by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for their album Moanin ' . This was followed by Wes Montgomery with Johnny Griffin and 1999, the Modern Jazz Quartet .

Come Rain or Come Shine also recorded Frank Sinatra (1961) and Diane Schuur (1986), who received a Grammy for best female jazz vocal recording for their standards album . Keith Jarrett interpreted the song with his standards trio .
