Dinah Shore, née Frances Rose Shore (born February 29, 1916 in Winchester , Tennessee , † February 24, 1994 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American singer , actress , television presenter and golfer .

Life

Shore began her career as a teenager in Nashville , Tennessee, as a singer with the Francis Craig Orchestra, and moved to New York in the 1930s . However, her desire to work as a singer in the big popular big bands was rejected by Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman after auditions . Nevertheless, she decided to continue working as a solo singer and received a recording contract in 1940.

In 1942 she had her first big hit with Blues in the Night, which sold over a million times. She made her film debut in the 1943 musical film Thank Your Lucky Stars . In the same year she married the western star George Montgomery , with whom she was married until 1962 and had two children. In 1944 she had her first number one hit in the US with I'll Walk Alone from the film Follow the Boys . The song was nominated for an Oscar . She developed into the most popular singer in the USA, which also opened the doors to her in Hollywood . In 1944 she made three more films, including Belle of the Yukon .

In the 1950s, its popularity was increased by television. Their Dinah Shore Show was one of the most popular television shows in America , even before Frank Sinatra , Judy Garland and others discovered this format of guest music show. Her show ran until 1963. She was sponsored by the car company Chevrolet (therefore also called Dinah Shore Chevy Show ), for which she also made advertising (See the USA in Your Chevrolet) .

She had another afternoon talk show in the 1970s . She also tried her hand as a singer and actress until the late 1980s.

Dinah Shore died in 1994 at the age of 77 years to cancer . The funeral took place at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City , California .

Dinah Shore, who also played golf herself , was a long-time sponsor of professional women's golf. In 1972 she co-founded the Colgate Dinah Shore golf tournament, now known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship . It is one of the four major golf tournaments for women on the LPGA Tour . The tournament is held each spring near Shore's home in Rancho Mirage , California . Shore was also the first female member of the famous Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles .

In recognition of her services to the sport of golf, Dinah Shore was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1994 as the only honorary member to date . “This honor is not awarded, but acquired,” said LPGA representative Charles Mechem in his laudatory speech . In 1985 she had already received the Patty Berg Award and in 1993 the Old Tom Morris Award , the highest award of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

Honors

Dinah Shore has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her work in television, radio and music. A five-day Palm Springs lesbian festival that has been going on since 1991 is named after her Dinah Shore Weekend .

In the course of her career, Dinah Shore was nominated for a total of 17 Emmy Awards , and then won the award eight times. For the Dinah! Shore was in 1977 nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Television Series Actress - Comedy or Musical . In 1956 she had already received a Golden Globe Award for her guest appearance in the Disneyland series .
