George Montgomery (1960)

George Montgomery Letz (born August 29, 1916 in Brady , Montana , † December 12, 2000 in Rancho Mirage , California ) was an American film actor .

Life

Montgomery was born in Montana as the youngest son of Ukrainian immigrants. The later western actor had 14 siblings and grew up on a large ranch , where he learned to ride as a child. After school, he studied interior design . However, he only stayed at the University of Montana for a year and went to Hollywood to break into the movie business. First he got jobs as a stuntman and smaller roles in low-budget westerners from 1935 . However, he remained connected to the interior design profession throughout his life and designed houses for numerous Hollywood stars. Until 1940 he appeared as George Letz. After signing a contract with 20th Century Fox , he called himself George Montgomery. His film career has been going uphill since then, but was interrupted by his entry into World War II in 1943. In the same year he married the popular entertainer Dinah Shore , who was married until 1962 and had two children. Montgomery hit the headlines in 1963 when his housekeeper tried to murder him .

In addition to filming, Montgomery was a talented sculptor who created sculptures of his colleagues. This is how sculptures by Gene Autry , Clint Eastwood , Ronald Reagan and Randolph Scott were created . His sculpture of Dinah Shore and her children can be seen on the grounds of the Mission Hills Country Club golf course in Rancho Mirage, where the Dinah Shore golf tournament is held every year.
