life and career

Lew Landers was one of the most high - profile and busy B-movie directors of his generation. From 1934 until his death he was responsible for a total of over 140 feature films. He shot his first films primarily at Universal Studios , including his perhaps best-known today - The Raven , a horror film with Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff in the leading roles , which is also highly regarded by film critics . He later shot the horror comedy The Boogie Man Will Get You (1942) with Karloff, and the vampire film The Return of the Vampire (1943) with Bela Lugosi . In the course of his career, Landers staged works with other prominent actors such as Peter Lorre , Joan Fontaine , Paul Henreid , Gene Autry , Tim Holt , Jon Hall , Richard Dix , Edmond O'Brien , Harry Carey , Warner Baxter , Louis Hayward , Lucille Ball , Freddie Bartholomew , Dorothy Malone , Victor McLaglen and Erich von Stroheim .

Later in his career, Landers often worked for RKO Pictures or Columbia , where he mostly had to shoot under high time pressure and low production costs. Landers was responsible for several of the "Boston Blackie" crime films starring Chester Morris in the 1940s . In the early 1950s he made two adventure films with Johnny Weissmüller , who ultimately wanted to continue his Tarzan successes in vain . From 1954, Landers shifted his focus to television work, where he directed numerous episodes of various television series. He died of a heart attack in December 1962 at the age of 61. The independent film Terrified was released posthumously the following year . Lew Landers is buried in the Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles.
